Evaluation of the accuracy of three-dimensionally printed patient-specific guides for transsphenoidal hypophysectomy in small-breed dogs

The results showed that the surgical guide can aid the neurosurgeon in locating the burring site of the outer cortical layer of the basisphenoid bone with good accuracy. However, understanding the anatomy of the region and knowing how to create a slot within the basisphenoid bone are still essential.

Transsphenoidal hypophysectomy as a treatment for Rathke's cleft cyst in a dog

Summary: This study describes the clinical, imaging, surgical, and histopathological findings of a dog with Rathke's cleft cyst of the pituitary gland. The case presented with an acute onset of abnormal behavior, and magnetic resonance imaging revealed a pituitary mass. Transsphenoidal hypophysectomy was performed, and histopathology confirmed the presence of Rathke's cleft cyst. This study emphasizes the importance of considering Rathke's cleft cyst in the differential diagnosis of pituitary masses in dogs.

The tumors can be hormonally active or silent, with corticotroph adenoma being the most common type in dogs and somatotroph adenoma in cats. Future studies are needed to better understand pituitary adenoma pathology and tumorigenesis mechanisms, in order to develop more effective targeted therapies.
