Foundational Number Sense Training Gains Are Predicted by Hippocampal Parietal Circuits

Hyesang Chang et al.

Summary: The development of mathematical skills in early childhood relies on number sense, and deficits in number sense can lead to impairments in mathematical abilities throughout life. However, the brain circuit mechanisms underlying number sense learning are not well understood. This study designed a training program to investigate the brain circuits involved in foundational number sense learning and found that the strength of connectivity between the hippocampus and intraparietal sulcus predicts individual differences in number sense learning in typically developing children and those with learning difficulties.

Decision Making as a Learned Skill in Mice and Humans

Michael I. Posner et al.

Summary: Attention is an essential component in learning, and studies have shown how attention and memory interact during skill learning. Pathways connecting attention networks and the hippocampus have been identified in both animal and human studies, particularly linking the executive and orienting networks with the hippocampus through different regions. These findings have led to specific predictions about the functional roles of these pathways and suggest potential methods for manipulation and assessment using viral expression techniques in mice. Further studies may provide insights into how these pathways work together during skill learning.

Cognitive training enhances growth mindset in children through plasticity of cortico-striatal circuits

Lang Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the malleability of growth mindset in children and its neurobiological underpinnings through a four-week training program. The findings demonstrate that cognitive training significantly enhances children's growth mindset, and the plasticity of cortico-striatal circuitry plays a crucial role in growth mindset gains. This study provides important insights into effective interventions that promote growth mindset and learning during the early stages of cognitive development.

Dyslexia in the 21st century

Sally E. Shaywitz et al.

Summary: Recent studies validate dyslexia as an unexpected reading difficulty, affecting 20% of the population, with achievement gap evident as early as first grade. Knowledge of dyslexia should be disseminated to educators, policymakers, and parents of dyslexic children.

On Neuroeducation: Why and How to Improve Neuroscientific Literacy in Educational Professionals

Jelle Jolles et al.

Summary: Neuroscience findings in the field of education have garnered attention, but face challenges such as prevailing neuromyths, confusion between various neurodisciplines and behavioral educational sciences, and an excessive emphasis on teaching methods rather than inspiring and supporting teachers in neuroeducation. The key insights lie in the concept of brain plasticity and the interaction between an individual's biology and social system in driving development. Developing neuroscientific literacy is crucial for educational professionals to integrate neuroscience knowledge effectively for educational innovation.
