New phylogenetic insights on some species of Unionidae from Switzerland (Bivalvia, Palaeoheterodonta, Unionidae)

Beat Pfarrer et al.

Summary: Switzerland's drainage systems are divided into three major European river basins. The identity and number of freshwater mussel species in Switzerland remain uncertain. This study used molecular methods to assess Swiss populations of freshwater mussels and provided new records and knowledge about these species.

Postglacial Expansion Routes and Mitochondrial Genetic Diversification of the Freshwater Pearl Mussel in Europe and North America

Ilya V. Vikhrev et al.

Summary: This study reconstructs the post-glacial expansion routes of the freshwater pearl mussel based on FST genetic distances and the connection between its distribution and salmonid expansion. The populations from North America and Northeastern Europe are the closest, supporting the idea of North Atlantic salmon colonization. Unique haplotypes in the Baltic and White Sea basins may have originated from isolated glacial refugia. The Iberian populations are the most distant, consistent with the role of the Iberian Peninsula as a glacial refugium. Northern and Eastern Karelia populations show high genetic diversity due to migration and admixture.

Phylogeographic study of the West Australian freshwater mussel, Westralunio carteri, uncovers evolutionarily significant units that raise new conservation concerns

M. W. Klunzinger et al.

Summary: The freshwater mussel Westralunio carteri in southwestern Australia is a vulnerable species with complex taxonomic and population genetic history. The study identified three evolutionarily significant units and supported the idea of dividing it into two distinct species based on different geographic ranges. The phylogeographic patterns confirm the historical separation of Western and Southern paleo-basins, as well as the isolation of the south-western extremity of the region.

European small mammal faunas during Dnieper (Saale) glaciation and transition to the Mikulino (Eem) interglacial

A. K. Markova et al.

Summary: The analysis of European fossil small mammals during the Dnieper (Saale) Glaciation (MIS 6) revealed significant changes in species composition, distribution, and diversity. The faunas experienced cardinal changes within the subcontinent boundaries, with exceptions in the southern peninsulas. The transition to the Mikulino (Eem) Interglacial (MIS 5e) was marked by shifts in subarctic mammal species ranges, gradual restoration of the forest zone, and eastward shifts in steppe species ranges. Additionally, the faunas of the two periods differed in composition, with the former having a mixed composition and the latter exhibiting a zonal structure.

Diversity, biogeography, evolutionary relationships, and conservation of Eastern Mediterranean freshwater mussels (Bivalvia: Unionidae)

Manuel Lopes-Lima et al.

Summary: The Eastern Mediterranean region is characterized by high diversity and endemism of freshwater mussels, with over 70% more Unionidae species than previously assumed. Two new species were proposed, along with re-descriptions and reclassifications of existing taxa. Phylogeographic patterns were interpreted in the context of past geological events, and conservation priorities and implications were presented.
