Molecular analyses of pseudoscorpions in a subterranean biodiversity hotspot reveal cryptic diversity and microendemism

Summary: Croatian pseudoscorpions, a common and diverse lineage of arachnids, exhibit both diversity in karstic microhabitats and surface habitats. A hotspot of groundwater amphipod diversity on a crossroad of evolutionary radiations

Summary: This study investigated the biodiversity patterns and underlying processes of the groundwater ecosystem using the hyper-speciose amphipod genus Niphargus as a model system. The results showed that species richness and phylogenetic diversity do not predictably correlate and different processes have led to the formation of species-rich areas in the Western Balkans. This calls for caution in conservation strategies relying solely on the number of species and may change the view on conservation priorities within this region.

Eupera troglobia sp. nov.: the first troglobitic bivalve from the Americas (Mollusca, Bivalvia, Sphaeriidae)

Summary: A new species of cave-dwelling bivalve, named Eupera troglobia sp. nov., has been discovered in the Americas, making it the first fully described troglobitic bivalve in the region and possibly the second worldwide. Unlike its relatives, this species attaches to the walls of caves using a byssus and shows some anatomical peculiarities compared to its congeners. This discovery contributes to the conservation efforts of subterranean habitats in Brazil.

From light to darkness: the duality of influence of habitat heterogeneity on Neotropical terrestrial cave invertebrate communities

Summary: This study compares the substrate elements and invertebrate communities in the twilight and deep-cave zones of caves using the theory of habitat heterogeneity. It finds that habitat heterogeneity significantly affects species richness in the deep cave zone but not in the twilight zone. The geographic distribution of caves explains the similarity between twilight zones and the dissimilarity between deep-cave zones.

Life-history traits drive spatial genetic structuring in Dinaric cave spiders

Summary: The subterranean ecosystem imposes strong selection pressures on organisms, leading to the development of adaptations known as troglomorphism in cave-dwelling species. Traditional sampling difficulties in cave ecosystems have hindered research progress. In this study, a museomics approach was used to compare the genetic population structures of five cave spider species in the northern Dinarides. The results revealed deeper population structuring and more pronounced patterns of isolation in highly troglomorphic ground dwellers, while web-building species showed less structured populations and higher dispersal ability. The spatial distribution of genetic groups suggested the importance of environmental features in driving dispersal potential and shaping underground diversity.

A subterranean adaptive radiation of amphipods in Europe
