Genetic Differentiation among Subspecies of Banksia nivea (Proteaceae) Associated with Expansion and Habitat Specialization

Jane Sampson et al.

Summary: Subspecies are traditionally defined by phenotypic differences, but morphological and genetic data may not always align. This study examined the genetic divergence of Banksia nivea subspecies in southwest Australia and found evidence for genetic differentiation among subspecies. The results supported the existing taxonomy but also revealed some inconsistencies, which may be attributed to differences in habitat and geography.

Diversity and distribution of Oxytropis DC. (Fabaceae) species in Asian Russia

Denis V. Sandanov et al.

Summary: This article discusses the dataset providing information on the geographic distribution of Oxytropis species in Asian Russia. The dataset covers less-studied remote regions and is valuable for plant biologists and ecologists interested in Oxytropis species. The dataset includes 5172 distribution records for 143 species and 15 subspecies, filling gaps in the distribution and providing precise coordinates for rare and endemic species.

Ecological specialization promotes diversity and diversification in the Eastern Mediterranean genus Ricotia (Brassicaceae)

Baris Ozudogru et al.

Summary: Despite its biodiversity, the Eastern Mediterranean is not well-studied compared to the Western Mediterranean. This study used molecular markers and presence/absence data to investigate the historical, ecological, and evolutionary factors driving diversification in the Eastern Mediterranean genus Ricotia. The results show high genetic structure within lineages and a correlation between within-lineage diversification and the onset of the Mediterranean climate.

The species of Oxytropis DC. of section Gloeocephala Bunge (Fabaceae) from Northeast Asia: genetic diversity and relationships based on sequencing of the intergenic spacers of cpDNA and ITS nrDNA

Alla Kholina et al.

Summary: This study investigated the phylogenetic relationships within Oxytropis sect. Gloeocephala from Northeast Asia using plastid and nuclear DNA analysis. The results showed low levels of genetic diversity in the chloroplast genomes of O. anadyrensis, O. borealis, O. middendorffii, O. trautvetteri, and O. vasskovskyi, possibly due to severe bottlenecks during Pleistocene glaciation-interglacial cycles. Specific diagnostic markers were found in both the chloroplast and nuclear genomes, supporting the classification of certain populations as independent species. The differences observed in the plastid and nuclear genomes confirm that the Asian sector of Megaberingia played a key role in the diversification of arctic legumes.

Determinants of Genetic Structure in a Highly Heterogeneous Landscape in Southwest China

Moses C. Wambulwa et al.

Summary: Intra-specific genetic diversity is crucial for species adaptation and survival. This study analyzed the patterns of plastid genetic diversity within 15 plant species in southwest China and identified the highest genetic diversity in the Yulong Mountain region. The study also found that climatic, topographic, and anthropogenic factors influenced genetic diversity.

Micromorphological leaf epidermal traits as potential taxonomic markers for infrageneric classification of Oxytropis (Fabaceae)

Xiang Zhao et al.

Summary: The leaf epidermal characteristics of Oxytropis species were investigated using microscopy. Different cell shapes, wall patterns, and trichome shapes were observed. These features are useful for species delimitation and phylogenetic studies. Stomatal type is consistent within the genus and can be used for taxonomic identification.

Life history, climate and biogeography interactively affect worldwide genetic diversity of plant and animal populations

H. De Kort et al.

Summary: Understanding how biological and environmental factors interactively shape the global distribution of plant and animal genetic diversity is fundamental to biodiversity conservation. Plants systematically display much lower genetic diversity in local populations compared to animals, with life history traits, such as animal longevity and size, and climate being important factors for predicting the distribution of genetic diversity within populations.

Genetic diversity of Oxytropis section Xerobia (Fabaceae) in one of the centres of speciation

Alla Kholina et al.

Summary: The study of genetic diversity and phylogenetic relationships in the genus Oxytropis reveals high levels of complexity, with unresolved relationships and evidence of shared genetic complexity among species. The presence of two ribotypes in the ITS nrDNA suggests variation within and among different species.

The demographic and ecological factors shaping diversification among rare Astragalus species

Matthew R. Jones et al.

Summary: The study found that in a small desert region in southeast Utah, demographic and ecological mechanisms promote diversification, endemism, and rarity in the threatened Astragalus species complex. High-throughput DNA sequencing revealed the impacts of demographic history, geographical and ecological distances on genetic differentiation, and identified potential adaptive loci.

Why More Leaflets? The Role of Natural Selection in Shaping the Spatial Pattern of Leaf-Shape Variation in Oxytropis diversifolia (Fabaceae) and Two Close Relatives

Hui Wang et al.

Summary: Leaf shape in Oxytropis diversifolia exhibits a spatial cline influenced by macroclimatic variables, with leaflet number and size varying with annual precipitation, temperature seasonality, and isothermality. Compared to closely related species, O. diversifolia populations show little neutral genetic differentiation and no population structure, suggesting that abiotic environmental factors contribute to shaping leaf shape variation in this species.

Variability of Chloroplast DNA in Oxytropis Section Polyadena (Fabaceae) from Asian Russia: Population Analysis and Phylogenetic Relationships

A. B. Kholina et al.

Summary: Analysis of nucleotide polymorphism in populations of six Oxytropis species from Asian Russia revealed significant genetic differentiation between some species, with high interspecific genetic distances and species-specific nucleotide substitutions. However, a weakly differentiated complex was also identified, likely due to relatively recent divergence among the species within that group.
