Diversity and Agronomic Performance of Lupinus mutabilis Germplasm in European and Andean Environments

Agata Gulisano et al.

Summary: The introduction of Lupinus mutabilis in Europe provides new sources of protein and oil, and contributes to soil improvement. This study evaluates the phenotypic variability of a large panel of L. mutabilis accessions in different environments and identifies traits that contribute to variation between accessions. Results show higher grain yield in Mediterranean winter-cropping conditions and suitability for biomass production in North European summer-cropping conditions. Flowering time, yield, and architecture-related traits were found to be the main factors explaining variation between accessions.

Determining Genetic Diversity and Population Structure of Common Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) Landraces from Turkiye Using SSR Markers

Guller Ozkan et al.

Summary: This study assessed the genetic diversity of common bean landraces and commercial varieties in the Ispir district of Turkey using SSR markers. The results showed a rich genetic diversity in the local landraces, which can be used for breeding programs and contribute to bean breeding in Turkey.

Exploring the Genetic Diversity and Population Structure of Wheat Landrace Population Conserved at ICARDA Genebank

Muhammad Massub Tehseen et al.

Summary: In this study, genetic diversity and population structure of 600 bread wheat landraces were analyzed using SNP markers. The results showed that the population could be grouped into three subpopulations based on geographical information rather than countries. Additionally, genetic distance analysis revealed significant differences between landraces from different countries.

Smart breeding driven by big data, artificial intelligence, and integrated genomic-enviromic prediction

Yunbi Xu et al.

Summary: The first paradigm of plant breeding involves direct selection-based phenotypic observation, followed by predictive breeding using statistical models for quantitative traits constructed based on genetic experimental design and molecular marker genotypes. However, plant performance is determined by the combined effects of genotype, envirotype, and genotype by environment interaction. Integration of multidimensional information profiles, including spatiotemporal omics, provides predictive breeding with both tremendous opportunities and challenges.

Inferring population structure and genetic diversity of the invasive alien Nootka lupin in Iceland

Jakub Skorupski et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the genetic diversity of Nootka lupin in Iceland, showing the presence of five previously unexplained single-nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) with relatively low discriminatory power for Icelandic populations. Analysis of multilocus genotypes (MLG) revealed sufficient differences in MLGs variants and their frequency to form genotypic patterns unique for Alaskan and Icelandic populations, indicating an internal genetic structure of the studied group. Further research is needed to supplement the proposed SNP panel with other nuclear and organellar markers.

Lupin proteins: Structure, isolation and application

Smriti Shrestha et al.

Summary: This review highlights the increasing interest in plant-based protein sources, with a focus on the potential of sweet lupin as a high-protein plant source. By comparing different extraction methods and their effects on protein properties, the study provides a theoretical basis for the application of sweet lupin protein in food products.

Estimation of the Genetic Diversity and Population Structure of Thailand's Rice Landraces Using SNP Markers

Wanchana Aesomnuk et al.

Summary: The study reveals rich genetic diversity in rice germplasm resources in different geographical regions of Thailand, with high genetic differentiation within populations. The greatest genetic differentiation was found between the northeastern and southern populations, while the smallest genetic differentiation was observed between the northern and northeastern populations. There is a significant relationship between genetic distance and geographic distance among Thai rice landraces.

Pollination increases white and narrow-leaved lupin protein yields but not all crop visitors contribute to pollination

Thijs P. M. Fijen et al.

Summary: The study found that larger insects such as buff-tailed bumblebees play a key role in pollinating lupin crops, with increased visitation rates significantly boosting protein yield. Effective management of pollinator species, particularly buff-tailed bumblebees, can enhance crop yield and profitability in lupin cultivation.

Latitudinal and Longitudinal Trends of Seed Traits Indicate Adaptive Strategies of an Invasive Plant

Lifeng Zhou et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates that invasive plant Ambrosia artemisiifolia adapts its seed traits in response to climate variations along latitudes and longitudes. Germination time is delayed with increasing latitude and longitude, while germination rate shows a reversed pattern. Temperature is identified as the dominant driver of the variability in seed traits and germination.
