Description of a new and widely distributed species of Bathypathes (Cnidaria: Anthozoa: Antipatharia: Schizopathidae) previously misidentified as Bathypathes alternata Brook, 1889

Summary: For many years, an undescribed species of the genus Bathypathes has been mistakenly identified as Bathypathes alternata. This new species is widespread in the Pacific, Atlantic, and Indian oceans, particularly in areas with cobalt-rich ferromanganese crusts. It can be easily distinguished from Bathypathes alternata based on morphological differences.

A new species of Bathypathes (Cnidaria, Anthozoa, Antipatharia, Schizopathidae) from the Red Sea and its phylogenetic position

Summary: In this study, a new species of black coral, Bathypathes thermophila Chimienti, sp. nov., was described using an integrated taxonomic approach. Molecular analyses confirmed the morphological distinctiveness of the new species. It was found that this species thrives in warm and high salinity waters typical of the Red Sea at bathyal depths. The study also questioned the evolutionary significance of traditionally used morphological characters for discriminating Antipatharia at higher taxonomic levels.

New genus and species of black coral from the SW Pacific and Antarctica (Cnidaria: Anthozoa: Antipatharia: Schizopathidae)

Summary: A new genus and three new species in the family Schizopathidae were described based on morphological data. The new genus resembles Telopathes in appearance but differs in certain features. Molecular analysis supported the significance of these anatomical differences. Interestingly, the three new species did not form a monophyletic clade based on mitochondrial DNA, suggesting the possibility of morphological convergence.

Summary: This study describes five new species of deep-sea antipatharian corals from the North Pacific, primarily collected off the coast of Alaska and on adjacent seamounts, all belonging to the family Schizopathidae. Illustrations of the type material of three known species are provided for comparison, and a new species is recognized while another is considered to be distinct from its original classification.
