Vascular epiphytes in Argentinian Yungas: distribution, diversity, and ecology

Sergio Javier Ceballos

Summary: Vascular epiphytes in the subtropical region of Yungas in Argentina have been understudied compared to tropical regions. This study compiled occurrence records of epiphytes and described their distribution and diversity in the region. The study found 168 epiphyte species, mainly belonging to the Orchidaceae, Bromeliaceae, and Polypodiaceae families. The species richness peaked at an elevation of 1500 m and decreased at higher and lower elevations. Ocotea porphyria was identified as the most important host tree for epiphytes in this region.

Mountain Ferns: What Determines Their Elevational Ranges and How Will They Respond to Climate Change?

Michael Kessler et al.

Summary: This review examines the response of ferns to climate change. It finds that the elevational distributions of ferns are influenced by various factors, including geographical constraints, habitat availability, physiological processes, and biotic interactions. Therefore, the reactions of ferns to climate change are likely to be specific to the species and context.

Mountains, climate and niche heterogeneity explain global patterns of fern diversity

Jacob S. Suissa et al.

Summary: This study aims to understand the factors contributing to the spatial heterogeneity of species diversity, particularly in ferns. By integrating species occurrence records, phylogenetic data, and climate layers, the research identifies hotspots of fern species richness and endemism, with tropical and subtropical mountains standing out as key regions. High environmental heterogeneity regions are found to harbor a disproportionate amount of fern species, with total species richness linearly scaling with available climate space.
