Role of elastic upper limit in shakedown study for granular soils

Pingxin Xia et al.

Summary: This study proposes a new concept of elastic upper limit of quasi-elasticity extension and investigates three types of sand through three-stage slow cyclic triaxial tests. The results show that the quasi-elastic curve extends until it reaches the elastic upper limit and then deviates. It is found that the derived elastic upper limit is close to the plastic shakedown limit, especially at high levels of confining pressure. A new criterion is proposed to determine the plastic shakedown limit based on the linear dependence of the degree of elasticity on the cyclic stress level. The introduction of the concept of elastic upper limit provides new insights into shakedown study for granular soils.

The behaviour of a recycled road base aggregate and quartz sand with bender/extender element tests under variable stress states

Huan He et al.

Summary: The study focused on investigating the small strain dynamic properties of a recycled road base material and quartz sand through laboratory testing, measuring shear wave velocities and primary wave velocities in isotropic and anisotropic stress states. The results provided insights into the responses of the materials under different stress conditions.

Mechanism study of the evolution of quasi-elasticity of granular soil during cyclic loading

Pingxin Xia et al.

Summary: This study investigates the evolution of elastic properties of granular soil under cyclic loading, proposing the cyclic triaxial test as an alternative method to detect the elastic response of granular soil and validating the hypothesis through DEM simulations. The research shows that the quasi-elastic process of granular soil approaches the elastic modulus with the increase in cyclic loading, attributing this evolution to energy dissipation due to sliding events between particle contacts.

Microscopic Pore Structure and Improved Permeability Characterization of COx Argillite Based on SEM Images

Hong-yang Ni et al.

Summary: Permeability is an important parameter for evaluating the sealing performance of COx argillite in high-level radioactive waste repository. The pore size distributions obtained by discrete and continuous algorithms differ, with continuous methods showing results closer to mercury intrusion porosimetry. By considering the contribution of pores of different sizes to permeability, more accurate results can be obtained.

Swelling and gas transport characteristics of saturated compacted bentonite/sand samples considering the scale effect

Jiang-Feng Liu et al.

Summary: Gas generation and migration is an unavoidable process to consider in the safety evaluation of nuclear waste geological repositories. The study shows significant effects of gas/water on pore pressure and total pressure of bentonite/sand samples, with a mathematical relationship between gas pressure, total pressure, and effective swelling pressure. Size has limited impact on swelling pressure and gas breakthrough properties, with laboratory experiments providing reliable results for in situ design.
