Strength behavior of circular concrete-filled steel tube stub columns under axial compression: A review

Xiuling Wang et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the compressive strength of circular concrete-filled steel tube stub columns (CFST-SCs) and evaluates the applicability and reliability of international design specifications for predicting compressive strength. The study reveals that all specifications yield conservative predictions on the strength capacity of CFST-SCs. Additionally, the paper provides recommendations for preventing buckling failure and assesses the applicability of existing guidelines for evaluating axial strength of CFST-SCs.

Experimental and numerical behavior of eccentrically loaded square concrete-filled steel tubular long columns made of high-strength steel and concrete

Guo-Chang Li et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the fundamental behavior of high-strength concrete-filled high-strength square steel tubular long columns under eccentric compression through experimental tests and numerical investigations. Equations are proposed to predict the peak-loads of the columns, and comparisons are made with various design codes to assess their feasibility. The research findings provide insights into the mechanical characteristics and failure mechanisms of high-strength materials in CFST columns, offering improved prediction models for practical applications.

Lateral Impact Resilient double concave Friction Pendulum (LIR-DCFP) bearing: Formulation, parametric study of the slider and three-dimensional numerical example

Gaspar Auad et al.

Summary: Seismic isolation using frictional isolators is a common method, but internal impact between components may lead to failure. This paper introduces a new friction device, LIR-DCFP bearing, which enhances dynamic behavior and reduces structural forces. Comparative analysis shows significant reductions in base shear, inter-story drifts, and absolute accelerations with LIR-DCFP bearings.

Summary: The DFP bearing, derived from the SFP bearing, is capable of accommodating larger displacements in structural vibration control. Studies show that the DFP bearing system effectively reduces the seismic response of high-rise buildings under earthquake excitations, especially in near-source regions.

Experimental and analytical investigation of variable friction pendulum isolator

Jiying Shang et al.

Summary: This study introduces a variable friction mechanism into a traditional friction pendulum bearing by developing a variable friction bearing (VFPB) with a new friction composite. The VFPB is developed using simple processing technology, and a method for determining the active sliding band based on friction coefficient is proposed. The force-displacement relationships and relevant parameters of the VFPB are derived, and parametric studies investigate the effects of friction coefficient and number of sliding bands on its behavior.
