Durability of CFRP-confined seawater sea-sand concrete (SSC) columns under wet-dry cycles in seawater environment

Junlong Yang et al.

Summary: This paper experimentally explores the long-term behavior of carbon FRP-confined SSC columns with different wrapping schemes under wet-dry cycles in seawater environments. The results show that long-term exposure has little influence on the failure modes of wrapped specimens, and different trends are observed for compressive strength retentions and strength enhancement ratio retentions due to the influence of unconfined compressive strength. Furthermore, a new strength model is derived by introducing the proposed strength degradation coefficients, which can provide satisfactory strength predictions for the exposed FRP-confined concrete under natural marine environments.

Seismic performance of concrete columns confined by high-strength stirrups

Chongchi Hou et al.

Summary: Concrete columns confined by high-strength stirrups have higher bearing capacity and better deformation ability. The yield strength of high-strength stirrup cannot be used directly in calculating bearing capacity, and an easy-to-use model of skeleton curve is proposed to calculate the characteristic points of the skeleton curve. Hysteretic rules for the unloading and reloading stages are developed based on the proposed model, and the model and rules are verified and evaluated by comparing calculated curves and experimental curves.

Axial compression behaviours of seawater and sea sand concrete-filled GFRP stub tubes at arctic low temperatures

Jian Xie et al.

Summary: This study conducted a series of low-temperature tests on the axial compression behaviors of thirty stub columns, including different types of components and parameters. The results indicated an improvement in the axial compression behaviors of CFFTs at low temperatures, and proposed prediction formulas for reasonably predicting their ultimate compression resistance and ultimate axial strain.

Axial compression and bond behaviour of recycled aggregate concrete-filled stainless steel tubular stub columns

Lin-Hai Han et al.

Summary: This paper presents a series of tests on the axial compression behavior of recycled aggregate concrete-filled stainless steel tube (RAC-FSST) stub columns. The results showed the effect of confinement factor and recycled aggregate replacement ratio on column behavior. Formulas for bond strength and partial factors for the axial compressive strength calculation of RAC-FSST in different structures were proposed.

Muhammad Junaid Munir et al.

Summary: The generation of construction and demolition waste is causing global environmental crises. This study evaluates machine learning techniques for the design strength modeling of spiral steel confined natural aggregate concrete (SSCNAC) and recycled aggregate concrete (SSCRAC) columns. The results show that all machine learning models can accurately predict the design strength and improve the sustainability of concrete columns.

Artificial neural network model for predicting the local compression capacity of stirrups-confined concrete

Sheng Li et al.

Summary: This study explored a new approach using artificial neural networks (ANN) to predict the local compression capacity of stirrups-confined concrete. The ANN model was trained using a reliable database and showed high applicability and reliability in estimating the influence of different parameters on the local compression capacity. An empirical design equation was generated based on the ANN model.

A state-of-the-art review on the durability of seawater coral aggregate concrete exposed to marine environment

Yinlong Cao et al.

Summary: Utilizing coral debris as aggregate for SCAC can solve raw materials shortage and reduce energy consumption, but the high porosity and salt content of coral aggregate affect the long-term performance of concrete structures. Pre-treatment protocols and supplementary materials can enhance the durability of SCAC, but further research is needed. This paper presents and discusses the research on the durability of unmodified and modified SCAC under different environmental actions, and summarizes the service life prediction models of reinforced SCAC. It provides a basis for understanding SCAC durability and promoting its application in marine engineering.

Summary: The degradation of FRP bars in SWSSC is primarily influenced by water molecules, hydroxide ions, and chloride ions, with high temperature and stress also accelerating the degradation process. The presence of chloride ions can accelerate the hydration of cement, improving the early-age properties of SWSSC.

Initial-corrosion condition behavior of the Cr and Al alloy steel bars in coral concrete for marine construction

Lu Zhang et al.

Summary: In order to enhance the corrosion resistance of steel, alloying composition with added Cr and Al were designed for ordinary carbon steel, establishing a method to determine depassivation of the alloy steel bars in coral aggregate concrete. The corrosion behavior and resistance of the Cr and Al alloy steel bars were evaluated using electrochemical impedance spectroscopy, showing significant improvements in corrosion resistance compared to traditional HPB 400 bars. Additionally, the initial-corrosion condition behavior of these alloy steel bars in CAC was examined, providing valuable insights for their use in harsh marine environments.

Summary: This study investigated the use of eco-friendly slag-based alkali-activated materials to improve the weak characteristics of coral aggregates in concrete. Results showed that alkali-activated seawater coral aggregate concrete exhibited better performance than cement-based coral aggregate concrete and a model was established to explain the relationship between stress-strain curves, elastic modulus, and concrete compressive strength.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of stirrups and steel fiber content on the compression performance of ultrahigh-performance concrete. Results showed that specimens with high stirrup ratio, small spacing, and large fiber content demonstrated enhanced constraining effects and improved deformation capacity of the short column. The study proposed a calculation formula for the constrained UHPC peak stress and strain based on experimental results and theoretical analysis.
