A micro-macro constitutive model for rock considering breakage effects

Di Yu et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a three-scale binary medium-based constitutive model to describe the elasto-plastic behavior of mudstone samples. The model considers the meso structures and micro components and adopts different homogenization methods to obtain their respective mechanical properties. The extended self-consistent scheme is improved to be adaptable to composites with varying meso components. The micro-meso-macro constitutive model for mudstone samples is proposed based on the mean-field method and the critical mechanical connections between different scales.

Asymptotic homogenization of effective thermal-elastic properties of concrete considering its three-dimensional mesostructure

Zejiao Dong et al.

Summary: This study proposes an efficient algorithm for generating the concrete mesoscopic model with differently shaped aggregates and imperfect interfaces, and develops an asymptotic homogenization software platform for predicting the effective thermal-elastic properties of concrete by extending the thermal-stress method to the coefficients of thermal expansion (CTE) homogenization. The results show that the imperfect interfaces, aggregate types, aggregate gradation, voids, and aggregate orientation have varying degrees of effect on the thermal-elastic properties of concrete. The effect of aggregate morphology can be neglected.

Deterioration of concrete under the coupling effects of freeze-thaw cycles and other actions: A review

Ruijun Wang et al.

Summary: The coupling action between freeze-thaw (FT) cycles and chemical actions is a significant cause of concrete deterioration, with the combination of different degradation processes potentially resulting in more severe damage. Chemical actions have both positive and negative effects on FT cycles, while physical actions only exacerbate FT damage in synergy.

Damage characteristics and constitutive model of lightweight shale ceramsite concrete under static-dynamic loading

Xiaogang Wu et al.

Summary: The study found that damage in lightweight shale ceramsite concrete under static-dynamic loads is mainly caused by collapse of the structure in the aggregate, with circumferential prestressing having an inhibitory effect on the damage factor. The dynamic Drucker-Prager strength criterion for LWSCC was established and a new damage constitutive model, with clear physical meaning to parameters, was proposed for describing the mechanical response of LWSCC under static-dynamic loads.

Pore structure change and physico-mechanical properties deterioration of sandstone suffering freeze-thaw actions

Shibing Huang et al.

Summary: This study continuously monitored the pore structure change of red sandstone under freeze-thaw conditions and measured the compressive strength of sandstones after different freeze-thaw cycles. The results showed that the volume of nanopores and micropores decreased, while the volume of macropores increased with increasing freeze-thaw cycles. The compressive strength of the sandstones decreased and the internal friction angle increased. A relationship between the mechanical strength loss and the complexity of pore structure was established, indicating that the growth of macropores played a dominant role in the freeze-thaw damage and strength loss. This study provides a better understanding of the macro-micro freeze-thaw damage mechanism of stone materials.

Investigating high-temperature deformation evolution of concrete under sustained loading using DIC technology and a temperature-mechanical coupled damage constitutive model

Lei Wang et al.

Summary: In this study, the deformation and failure characteristics of concrete under sustained load and high temperature were analyzed using digital image correlation technology and uniaxial compression tests. A damage constitutive model was established to describe the combined effect of sustained load and high temperature. The findings showed that sustained load can effectively restrain the thermal expansion of concrete, but excessive load and temperature can lead to excessive lateral deformation and cracking failure of concrete. The sustained load can significantly enhance the mechanical properties of concrete at high temperatures, but excessive sustained loads may cause premature failure.

Damage characteristics and constitutive model of concrete under uniaxial compression after Freeze-Thaw damage

Yanlong Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the damage evolution of concrete with different degrees of freeze-thaw (F-T) damage through F-T cycle and compression tests. The results show that the degree of F-T damage increases with the number of F-T cycles. During compression failure, the amplitude of acoustic emission (AE) exhibits a more significant and rapid increase, indicating a more brittle behavior of concrete after F-T damage. The damage constitutive model established in this study accurately reflects the damage evolution of concrete during the entire process of uniaxial compression after F-T cycles.

Mesoscale modelling of size effect on the evolution of fracture process zone in concrete

Rongxin Zhou et al.

Summary: The study reveals that the concrete fracture process zone tends to exhibit a main crack and multiple secondary microcracks, with the irregular evolution path attributed to the random spatial distribution of aggregate particles and weak ITZ. The size effect has little impact on the width of the FPZ, but the length is strongly dependent on the beam size, and these characteristics are considered intrinsic reasons for the overall size effect phenomenon in concrete structures.

Summary: The study found that with an increase in FT cycles, concrete’s macroscopic fracture gradually propagated towards axial compression direction and changed from single to multiple fractures; under different confining pressures, peak deviator stress, elastic modulus, and strain increased. Additionally, FT damage weakened concrete’s deviator stress and lateral deformation capacity, making it more sensitive to confining pressure, while cohesion and internal friction angle decreased exponentially.
