Dengue: A Growing Problem With New Interventions

Joshua M. Wong et al.

Summary: Dengue is a common arboviral disease caused by dengue viruses, with the greatest burden in tropical and sub-tropical regions. Effective prevention and control measures are necessary to prevent the increasing disease burden and geographic range. Clinicians should understand the clinical presentation and management of dengue patients. The recommendation of Dengvaxia as a routine vaccine and the requirement for laboratory testing of potential recipients are important milestones in controlling dengue.

Development of nanoemulsions containing Lavandula dentata or Myristica fragrans essential oils: Influence of temperature and storage period on physical-chemical properties and chemical stability

Luciana Filippin Cossetin et al.

Summary: Essential oils are complex compound mixtures with important pharmacological properties, sensitive to environmental factors. Nanotechnology was used in this study to develop stable nanoemulsions of Lavandula dentata and Myristica fragrans essential oils. The nanoemulsions showed good stability and efficacy, with better performance observed at refrigeration temperature compared to room temperature for both essential oils. Chemical analyses proved the enhanced efficacy of the nanotechnology-based formulations in preserving the majority compound percentages throughout the storage period.

Ostwald ripening in macro- and nanoemulsions

Marina Yu Koroleva et al.

Summary: This study examines the characteristic features of Ostwald ripening in oil-in-water and water-in-oil macro- and nanoemulsions, as well as methods for reducing the ripening rate. It highlights the significant relevance of Ostwald ripening in nanoemulsions, and discusses the debatable issue of the role of surfactants in mass transfer between droplets. Additionally, it analyzes the formation of nanodroplets and slightly larger droplets on the surface of the starting emulsion due to interfacial instability.

Characterization of the essential oil from Annona acutiflora and its nanoemulsion for the Aedes aegypti control

Diogo Folly et al.

Summary: The study investigated the chemical composition of essential oil from Annona acutiflora and its larvicidal nanoemulsion. The nanoemulsion demonstrated significant larvicidal activity against Aedes aegypti larvae and also exhibited anticholinesterase activity in vitro. These findings indicate the potential of this method for vector control and highlight the importance of further research in this area.
