Noninvasive imaging biomarkers for liver fibrosis in nonalcoholic fatty liver disease: current and future

Jung Hwan Yu et al.

Summary: Nonalcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD) is a common and serious liver disorder, with liver fibrosis being a key factor in prognosis. However, traditional liver biopsy is invasive and costly, leading to the development of noninvasive imaging biomarkers such as elastography and magnetic resonance imaging. Additionally, artificial intelligence and deep learning techniques are being utilized to improve the accuracy of these imaging methods. In this review, we discuss the usefulness and future prospects of noninvasive imaging biomarkers in evaluating liver fibrosis in patients with NAFLD.

Clinical relevance of shear wave elastography compared with transient elastography and other markers of liver fibrosis

Oyekoya T. Ayonrinde et al.

Summary: This study compares the application of SWE, TE, and clinical markers in patients with various liver diseases and finds that SWE is at least comparable to TE and other non-invasive tests for liver fibrosis. SWE is highly accurate in predicting liver-related portal hypertension.

Inflammatory activity affects the accuracy of liver stiffness measurement by transient elastography but not by two-dimensional shear wave elastography in non-alcoholic fatty liver disease

Yuly P. Mendoza et al.

Summary: In patients with non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD), inflammatory activity significantly affects liver stiffness measurement (LSM) by transient elastography (TE), but not by two-dimensional shear wave elastography (2D-SWE). 2D-SWE reflects liver fibrosis more accurately than TE, and steatosis does not influence the association between LSM and fibrosis by either method.

Liver fibrosis assessment: MR and US elastography

Arinc Ozturk et al.

Summary: Elastography has become a preferred non-invasive imaging technique for clinical assessment of liver fibrosis, providing liver stiffness measurement as a surrogate biomarker for fibrosis burden. Both ultrasound and MRI-based elastography methods have shown to be accurate in detecting liver diseases.

Comparison of the diagnostic performance of shear wave elastography with shear wave dispersion for pre-operative staging of hepatic fibrosis in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma

Kun Wang et al.

Summary: This prospective study compared the diagnostic accuracy of shear wave elastography (SWE) and shear wave dispersion (SWD) in evaluating hepatic fibrosis in patients with hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). The results showed that both SWE and SWD values were highly correlated with liver fibrosis stage and necroinflammatory activity, and SWE had better diagnostic performance in predicting severe fibrosis and cirrhosis.

COMPARISON BETWEEN DIFFERENT MANUFACTURERS' 2-D AND POINT SHEAR WAVE ELASTOGRAPHY TECHNIQUES IN STAGING LIVER FIBROSIS IN CHRONIC LIVER DISEASE USING LIVER BIOPSY AS THE REFERENCE STANDARD: A PROSPECTIVE STUDY

Cheng Fang et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the utility of 2-D shear wave elastography (SWE) in assessing liver fibrosis in patients with chronic liver disease. It compared the performance of 2-D SWE with point shear wave elastography (pSWE), using liver histological staging as the reference standard. The results showed that 2-D SWE provides feasible and accurate assessment of liver fibrosis, comparable to that of pSWE.

COMPARISON OF 2-D SHEAR WAVE ELASTOGRAPHY AND POINT SHEAR WAVE ELASTOGRAPHY FOR ASSESSING LIVER FIBROSIS

Xiaozhuan Zhou et al.

Summary: A meta-analysis compared the diagnostic performance of 2-D shear wave elastography and point shear wave elastography in staging liver fibrosis in chronic liver disease patients. The study included 71 research articles with a total of 11,345 patients, showing both imaging techniques have high sensitivity and specificity for detecting various stages of liver fibrosis, with 2-D SWE being more sensitive in detecting significant fibrosis and advanced fibrosis.

Comparison of Elastography Point Quantification with Transient Elastography in Patients with Chronic Viral Hepatitis and Nonalcoholic Fatty Liver Disease: A Pilot Study

Savinay Kapur et al.

Summary: This study aimed to compare the diagnostic accuracy of ElastPQ and TE with liver histology in measuring liver stiffness in patients with chronic viral hepatitis and nonalcoholic fatty liver disease. The results showed that ElastPQ and TE correlated significantly with the stage of fibrosis, but their accuracy was poor in patients with CVH and ESRD.
