NDDNet: a deep learning model for predicting neurodegenerative diseases from gait pattern

Md. Ahasan Atick Faisal et al.

Summary: Neurodegenerative diseases can cause damage to neuromuscular tissues and motor neurons, leading to a decline in motor capacity, especially in walking gait. Early detection of abnormal gait patterns caused by these diseases is crucial for preventing associated risks. Previous studies relied on either gait parameters or Ground Reaction Force (GRF) signal for analysis. In this study, a novel neural network architecture called NDDNet was developed to combine both GRF signals and extracted features for detecting 3 types of neurodegenerative diseases with an average accuracy of 96.75%. This method may improve the analysis of gait patterns and aid in the more effective diagnosis of patients with abnormal gait.

Machine learning-based classification of healthy and impaired gaits using 3D-GRF signals

Md Nazmul Islam Shuzan et al.

Summary: Gait analysis using ground reaction forces (GRF) and machine learning methods can assist in rehabilitation, clinical diagnoses, and sporting activities. A study was conducted using the GaitRec and Gutenberg databases, which showed promising performance in automated gait disorder classification. The K-nearest neighbour model (KNN) performed the best in terms of accuracy, and the use of three-dimensional GRF improved overall performance. Time-domain and Wavelet features were found to be particularly useful in identifying gait patterns.
