Poor Correlation between Diaphragm Thickening Fraction and Transdiaphragmatic Pressure in Mechanically Ventilated Patients and Healthy Subjects

Thomas Poulard et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between diaphragm thickening fraction and transdiaphragmatic pressure. The results showed a weak correlation between the two variables, both globally and within individuals. Therefore, diaphragm thickening fraction should not be used to evaluate diaphragm function in healthy individuals or mechanically ventilated patients.

Positive end-expiratory pressure and prone position alter the capacity of force generation from diaphragm in acute respiratory distress syndrome: an animal experiment

Andi Muhammad Fadlillah Firstiogusran et al.

Summary: In patients with ARDS, PEEP and body position can modulate the capacity of force generation from the diaphragm. Higher PEEP, prone position per se, or both are effective in decreasing the force generation from the diaphragm.

EXpert consensus On Diaphragm UltraSonography in the critically ill (EXODUS): a Delphi consensus statement on the measurement of diaphragm ultrasound-derived parameters in a critical care setting

Mark E. Haaksma et al.

Summary: This study provides a consensus-based statement on the methodology of diaphragm ultrasonography through expert consensus, aiming to ensure high-quality and homogeneous measurements in daily clinical practice and research. Additionally, important gaps in current knowledge and key areas for research are identified.

Positive end-expiratory pressure affects geometry and function of the human diaphragm

Diana Jansen et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of short-term application of PEEP on diaphragm geometry and function, finding that increasing PEEP led to diaphragm displacement, muscle shortening, increased thickness, and reduced neuromechanical efficiency. These findings suggest that the conditions for developing longitudinal atrophy in the human diaphragm are present with the application of PEEP.
