Diagnostic value of upper airway morphological data based on CT volume scanning combined with clinical indexes in children with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome

Yanmin Shi et al.

Summary: This study aims to establish a new diagnostic method for pediatric obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) by combining upper airway imaging data and clinical signs. The morphological data of the upper airway based on CT volume scan images combined with clinical indices have been found to have high diagnostic value for OSA in children.

Prospective validation of a brief questionnaire for predicting the severity of pediatric obstructive sleep apnea

Summary: In a study involving pediatric patients, the SF questionnaire outperformed the PSQ-SRBD in predicting OSA and its severity. By comparing multiple models, SF demonstrated higher accuracy in predicting AHI>10 compared to other screening methods.

Comparison of home ambulatory type 2 polysomnography with a portable monitoring device and in-laboratory type 1 polysomnography for the diagnosis of obstructive sleep apnea in children

Adelaide Withers et al.

Summary: This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of type 2 polysomnography (T2PSG) and the gold standard type 1 in-laboratory polysomnography (T1PSG) for diagnosing obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in children, and validate the use of T2PSG at home for suspected OSA. The results showed that T2PSG at home had excellent concordance with T1PSG in diagnosing OSA in children aged 5-18. Home T2PSG may provide a more representative assessment of children's normal night sleep and could potentially reduce waiting times and costs for OSA investigation and treatment.

Measurement of snoring and stertor using the Sonomat to assess effectiveness of upper airway surgery in children

Mark B. Norman et al.

Summary: This study aims to assess the efficacy of surgical treatment for pediatric sleep-disordered breathing. Using the Sonomat system, the study found that although surgery improves breathing, success rates may be overestimated when using the MOAHI metric. Snoring and stertor may still disrupt sleep even when the MOAHI is normalized.

Nasal cannula use during polysomnography in children aged under three with suspected sleep apnea

Maria Jose Jurado et al.

Summary: The ability of a nasal cannula to detect obstructive events in children under the age of three is relatively low. Therefore, other non-invasive measurements for identifying respiratory events during sleep may have additional value.

Summary: The study investigated the night-to-night variability of pulse oximetry features in children with suspicion of Sleep Apnea and found most features showed no significant variability between different nights, with the exception of signal quality being significantly lower during at-home measurements.

Diagnostic accuracy of level IV portable sleep monitors versus polysomnography for pediatric obstructive sleep apnea: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Summary: This study analyzed the diagnostic performance of Level IV PMs compared with PSG for pediatric OSA diagnosis. The results showed that PM systems based on oximetry with new mathematical classifiers achieved variable degrees of diagnostic accuracy, with a pooled sensitivity of 74% and specificity of 90%. The study highlighted the potential of Level IV PMs as a simple and effective alternative to PSG for screening pediatric OSA patients.

The Genetics of Sleep Disorders in Children: A Narrative Review

Greta Mainieri et al.

Summary: Sleep is a crucial physiological process with potential familial susceptibility in sleep disorders, which are rarely attributed to single gene defects due to the complexity of the brain network. Genetic studies on sleep disorders have shifted from candidate gene approaches to genome-wide association studies.

Screening Severe Obstructive Sleep Apnea in Children with Snoring

Hui-Shan Hsieh et al.

Summary: Efficient screening for severe obstructive sleep apnea (OSA) in children who habitually snore is crucial before standard polysomnography, and a combination of home sleep pulse oximetry with adenoidal-nasopharyngeal ratio (ANR) shows the best predictive performance.
