Lymph node FNA cytology: Diagnostic performance and clinical implications of proposed diagnostic categories

Vladislav V. Makarenko et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the diagnostic performance of lymph node fine-needle aspiration cytology (LN-FNAC) for lymphoma and assessed the risks of malignancy associated with proposed diagnostic categories. Results showed high sensitivity, specificity, and accuracy of LN-FNAC, and that optimal specimen quality and reviews by multiple pathologists can improve diagnostic performance. Understanding the risks of malignancy associated with LN-FNAC diagnostic categories is important for optimal patient management.

Categorisation of lymph node aspirates using the proposed Sydney system with assessment of risk of malignancy and diagnostic accuracy

Sana Ahuja et al.

Summary: The Sydney system has been proposed as a uniform format for reporting lymph node cytopathology. This study aimed to classify lymph node aspirates according to the Sydney system and assess the risk of malignancy and other performance parameters. The results showed that the Sydney system accurately categorizes lymph node aspirates and improves patient management through better communication between cytopathologists and clinicians.

A roadmap for a comprehensive diagnostic approach to fine needle cytology of lymph node metastases

Gennaro Acanfora et al.

Summary: This study examines the cytological diagnosis of lymph node metastases and finds that fine needle cytology can reliably identify the origin of the primary tumor in addition to diagnosing metastatic tumors. The integration of clinical and cytomorphological findings, along with lymph node topography, improves diagnostic accuracy.

Testing EGFR with Idylla on Cytological Specimens of Lung Cancer: A Review

Alessandro Caputo et al.

Summary: The standard of care for advanced non-small-cell lung cancer involves detecting actionable mutations, with the Idylla EGFR test being able to detect 51 mutations in 2.5 hours. Cytological material can be used for this test, but caution should be taken as the accuracy may be reduced when using scraped stained smears as input.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the diagnostic accuracy of cytology by comparing FNAC and histopathologic examination results. The overall diagnostic sensitivity, specificity, PPV, and NPV of FNAC in lymph nodes were found to be 87.9%, 100%, 100%, and 89.7%, respectively, with an overall diagnostic accuracy of 94.1%. FNAC was shown to be a safe, easy, cheap, quick diagnostic tool that can reduce the need for diagnostic excisional biopsy in many patients.
