A survey of machine learning-based methods for COVID-19 medical image analysis

Kashfia Sailunaz et al.

Summary: The ongoing COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in 6.6 million deaths and over 637 million infections worldwide within a span of 30 months. Detecting and diagnosing the disease accurately and rapidly is of utmost importance. Researchers have been focusing on lung image analysis as a popular method for detecting COVID-19, utilizing AI and ML-based approaches using medical images from chest X-rays, CT scans, and lung ultrasound images. This paper provides a comprehensive review of recent approaches in COVID-19 image analysis, including existing research efforts, available datasets, performance metrics, and discusses the challenges and future research scopes in fighting COVID-19 from an AI perspective.

The value of chest X-ray and CT severity scoring systems in the diagnosis of COVID-19: A review

Naif Ali A. Majrashi

Summary: COVID-19 is diagnosed using the RT-PCR test, but it can sometimes produce false-negative results. Chest CT scans have shown to be useful in diagnosing COVID-19 and can help correct false-negative results from RT-PCR.

A Holistic Approach to Identify and Classify COVID-19 from Chest Radiographs, ECG, and CT-Scan Images Using ShuffleNet Convolutional Neural Network

Naeem Ullah et al.

Summary: Early and precise COVID-19 identification and analysis are crucial in reducing the spread of the virus. This study proposes an effective approach using the Shufflenet CNN for COVID-19 detection and classification, utilizing three types of images: chest radiograph, CT-scan, and ECG-trace images.

COVID-19 Patients in the COVID-19 Recovery and Engagement (CORE) Clinics in the Bronx

Anna Eligulashvili et al.

Summary: This study reports the symptoms and assessments of COVID-19 survivors up to five months post-acute infection. The results showed that many survivors experienced issues in pulmonary function, physical, emotional, and cognitive health. Furthermore, lung imaging abnormalities were more common than brain imaging abnormalities.

Incidence of new-onset in-hospital and persistent diabetes in COVID-19 patients: comparison with influenza

Justin Y. Lu et al.

Summary: This study compared the incidences and risk factors of new-onset persistent type-2 diabetes in COVID-19 patients to those in influenza patients. It was found that the incidence of type-2 diabetes was higher in COVID-19 patients compared to influenza patients. The risk of developing persistent type-2 diabetes was also higher in hospitalized COVID-19 patients compared to non-hospitalized COVID-19 patients and hospitalized influenza patients.

Clinical predictors of acute cardiac injury and normalization of troponin after hospital discharge from COVID-19

Joyce Q. Lu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the incidence of persistent acute cardiac injury (ACI) in COVID-19 survivors and identified clinical predictors of recovery. The results showed that ACI is common among COVID-19 survivors, and readily available patient data can accurately predict ACI recovery.

Machining learning predicts the need for escalated care and mortality in COVID-19 patients from clinical variables

Wei Hou et al.

Summary: This study developed a machine learning algorithm to identify key clinical measures to triage patients to general admission versus ICU admission and predict mortality in COVID-19 pandemic. The predictive model performed well with 89% AUC for mortality and 79% AUC for ICU admission. The findings provide practical insights for frontline physicians in clinical decision making.
