Scleral Buckling: A Review of Clinical Aspects and Current Concepts

Matteo Fallico et al.

Summary: Scleral buckling is a valuable surgical option for repairing retinal detachment, aiming to close retinal breaks and create a long-lasting adhesion. It yields better results in phakic eyes with uncomplicated or medium complexity retinal detachment, but can also lead to complications.

COMPARISON BETWEEN SCLERAL BUCKLING AND VITRECTOMY IN THE ONSET OF CYSTOID MACULAR EDEMA AND EPIRETINAL MEMBRANE AFTER RHEGMATOGENOUS RETINAL DETACHMENT REPAIR

M. A. G. D. A. GHARBIYA et al.

Summary: A retrospective study found that the incidence of cystoid macular edema (CME) was lower in patients with rhegmatogenous retinal detachment treated with scleral buckling (SB) compared to pars plana vitrectomy (PPV). Age was found to be correlated with the development of epiretinal membrane.

Cystoid Macular Edema after Rhegmatogenous Retinal Detachment Repair with Pars Plana Vitrectomy: Rate, Risk Factors, and Outcomes

Malik Merad et al.

Summary: This study aimed to describe the rate and outcomes of cystoid macular edema (CME) after pars plana vitrectomy (PPV) for primary rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) and identify the associated risk factors and imaging characteristics. The study found that worse presenting visual acuity, grade C proliferative vitreoretinopathy, endolaser retinopexy, and cataract surgery within 6 months of the initial RRD repair were risk factors for postoperative CME at 12 months.

Pneumatic retinopexy: A critical reappraisal

Argyrios Chronopoulos et al.

Summary: Pneumatic retinopexy (PR) has advantages in certain cases of rhegmatogenous retinal detachments, but has drawbacks in simple, good prognosis cases compared to scleral buckling or pars plana vitrectomy. Scleral buckling or pars plana vitrectomy may be more suitable for these cases.
