Chain-Extending Modification for Value-Added Recycled PET: A Review

Jae Young Jang et al.

Summary: The global environmental issues caused by plastic incineration are increasing, making PET recycling a crucial part of the global circular economy. Mechanical recycling is more efficient than chemical recycling for PET, but heat-induced degradations need to be addressed. This article details the process of PET recycling using a chain-extending extrusion method and reviews the effects of various chain extenders on the properties and processes of recycled PET.

The effect of different compatibilisers on the morphology and rheological properties of PP/PET polymer blends

Sheyda Kordjazi et al.

Summary: The study showed that different types of compatibilisers had varying effects on the morphology, thermal properties, and rheological properties of PP/PET blends. Compatibilised PP/PET blends exhibited smaller dispersed phase sizes, lower crystallinity percentage, and larger storage modulus at low frequencies compared to non-compatibilised blends. Among the different samples, the PP-g-MA (5 phr) compatibilised polymer blend showed the most significant improvement in reducing particle size and enhancing the compatibilisation of the PP/PET blend.

Water boosts reactive toughening of PET

Ferenc Ronkay et al.

Summary: The moisture content of PET has a direct impact on its molecular weight and properties during melt-processing. This study found that PET granules with higher moisture content can significantly increase the notched Izod impact strength when blended with a reactive terpolymer. However, the tensile strength and stiffness of the blends showed little variation. Scanning electron microscopic analyses also revealed that higher moisture content in PET leads to better interface compatibility with the terpolymer.

Rheological/thermal properties of poly(ethylene terephthalate) modified by chain extenders of pyromellitic dianhydride and pentaerythritol

Saeed Dolatshah et al.

Summary: This study investigated the synergistic effect of different chain extenders and catalysts on the rheological behavior of PET, finding that a combination of PMDA and PENTA at 1.5% and 0.5% respectively resulted in the best rheological properties for modified PET. Additionally, DBTDL acted as an accelerator for chain extension reaction, improving the rheological properties of PET by increasing the chain extending rate. Thermal properties of modified PET were also studied using differential scanning calorimetry.

Comparison of nanostructure and nanomechanical properties of cast and air sides of polyimide films from different manufacturers

Shaoyang Liu et al.

Summary: Polyimide films with different thicknesses from four manufacturers were compared in terms of morphology, roughness, nanomechanical properties, and imidization degrees. Significant differences were found between the two sides of the films in terms of roughness, DMT moduli, and imidization degrees. Manufacturer B provided the smoothest films with the highest DMT moduli and imidization degrees. Nanostructure and nanomechanical properties play a crucial role in determining the quality of the film.

Molecular structure and rheological properties of a poly(ethylene terephthalate) modified by two different chain extenders

Michael Haerth et al.

Summary: This paper compares the molecular structure and rheological properties of PET after reactive processing with two different chain extenders, PMDA and Joncryl. Both chain extenders lead to an increase in molar mass and the generation of long-chain branched molecules, but Joncryl is more likely to form gels and has a more compact branching structure compared to PMDA. Rheological measurements support the findings, showing a complex tree-like branching structure for both chain extenders.
