Patterned MXene-enabled switchable health monitoring and electromagnetic protection for architecture

Summary: Tailoring MXene composites enables the development of a health monitored strain array and an electromagnetic (EM) protective coating for customization of future high-quality life, particularly in specialized environments. The periodic patterned MXene exhibits high sensitivity of 96 MHz/% to structural deformation in the array. Use of the Ti3C2Tx composite as an EM coating achieves a shielding effect similar to 99.8% for customized spaces. The electrical conductivity tuning enables the Ti3C2Tx composite to switch between absorbing and shielding, with optimal EM absorption performance of -54.8 dB and average interference shielding performance exceeding 30 dB.

Thermally tailoring magnetic molecular sponges through self-propagating combustion to tune magnetic-dielectric synergy toward high-efficiency microwave absorption and attenuation

In this study, a three-dimensional magnetic molecular sponge with ultrahigh porous micro/nanostructure and uniformly dispersed CoFe units was successfully fabricated through an in site transformation process based on combustion. The CoFe@PCS exhibited efficient microwave absorption due to its unique framework microstructure and integrated magnetic-dielectric components.

This article demonstrates an effective method to predict the EMI shielding effectiveness of materials through simulating composite structures with alternating layers of conducting and magnetic materials. The simulations reveal that the strategic arrangement of electromagnetic energy-trapping layers significantly contributes to the enhancement of absorption-dominated EMI shielding. The highest shielding effectiveness is observed in conducting magnetic-conducting systems.

The effect of polyaniline sheath thickness on the electrical property and EMI performance of HCNFs/PANI nanocomposites is studied in detail. Results show that the HCNFs/PANI nanocomposites with a HCNFs loading of 50 wt% exhibit the highest electrical conductivity and the largest EMI shielding effectiveness within the X-band range. The excellent electrical conductivity, changeable dielectric resonance, and internal multiple scattering at interfaces contribute to the unique EMI shielding performance of HCNFs/PANI nanocomposites.
