Exploring the Circular Polarization Capacity from Chiral Cellulose Nanocrystal Films for a Photo-Controlled Chiral Helix of Supramolecular Polymers

Mingcong Xu et al.

Summary: The circular polarization capacity of chiral cellulose nanocrystal (CNC) films is demonstrated here to trigger the photo-alignment of achiral supramolecular polymers into helical structures. The chiral induction effect of circularly polarized light (CPL) is enhanced on polymers with longer spacers. Combining carbon dots with CNC films enables CPL emission with a considerable luminescence dissymmetry factor, which can be used for the photo-alignment of supramolecular polymers with high chiroptical properties.

Summary: This study investigated the formation and properties of composite films assembled by cellulose nanocrystals and bovine serum albumin-stabilized gold nanoclusters. It was found that the composite films retained the chiral nematic structure and optical activity, with the addition of polyethylene glycol enhancing flexibility without affecting structural color and fluorescence characteristics. The simplicity of film preparation, abundance of CNCs, and flexibility and stability of the composite films open avenues for producing functional materials with integrated functions.

Summary: Circularly polarized luminescent inorganics can be achieved by self-assembled cellulose nanocrystals decorated with blue emitting silicon quantum dots. The circular dichroism behavior of the hybrid films is closely related to the photonic band gap, while the circularly polarized luminescence is determined by the quantum dots and photonic band gap simultaneously. The chiral composite thin films can be used as an efficient circularly polarized light source for preparing enantioselective polymer.

Uncovering the Origin of Chirality from Plasmonic Nanoparticle/Cellulose Nanocrystal Composite Films

Sixiang Zhao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the generation of chirality and the relationship between surface-plasmon-mediated circular dichroism (SP-CD) and plasmonic-photonic couplings in co-assembled plasmonic nanoparticles and chiral photonic crystals. The characteristic SP-CD shape lines derived from the extinction dispersion of plasmonic nanoparticles in cellulose nanocrystals (CNCs) are observed in spectroscopy and simulation. It is demonstrated that the plasmonic chirality originates from a multiple scattering combination of plasmonic nanoparticles under a chiral excitation field and is determined by the coupling states.
