Experimental determination of gas-water relative permeability for ultra-low-permeability reservoirs using crushed-rock samples: Implications for drill cuttings characterization

Zhengru Yang et al.

Summary: Relative permeability controls fluid flow through rocks, with applications to hydrocarbon production, geologic carbon and energy storage. However, significant challenges are associated with the measurement of relative permeability for rocks with matrix permeability in the microdarcy to nanodarcy range. This study proposes an integrated experimental and modeling approach for gas relative permeability evaluation using crushed-rock samples and demonstrates the feasibility of determining gas-liquid relative permeability for ultra-low-permeability reservoir samples.

A novel permeability prediction model for coal based on dynamic transformation of pores in multiple scales

Ziwei Wang et al.

Summary: The Schlumberger-Doll research (SDR) model, widely used in predicting rock permeability, faces limitations when applied to coal due to its assumption of homogeneous pore structure. To address this issue, water flushing experiments were conducted using nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) on different coal samples. Comparative analysis revealed that the non-adsorbed pores, responsible for reservoir permeability, exhibited greater sensitivity under increasing effective stress. The fractal dimension of these non-adsorbed pores increased with decreasing water pressure, indicating more complex pore geometry and longer water flow pathway. Based on these findings, a novel coal permeability prediction model, incorporating the fractal dimension factor, was developed and shown to outperform the SDR model in terms of accuracy.

Permeability evolution of coal subjected to triaxial compression based on in-situ nuclear magnetic resonance

Chaolin Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the influence of stress on the evolution of coalbed methane permeability through compaction-permeability tests and in-situ nuclear magnetic resonance measurements. The results showed that permeability is closely related to coal pores, with an increase in damage leading to nonlinear permeability growth.

Comprehensive evaluation and interpretation of mercury intrusion porosimetry data of coals based on fractal theory, Tait equation and matrix compressibility

Quanlin Yang et al.

Summary: Accurate characterization of coal pore structure is essential for understanding gas storage and migration mechanisms. This study used fractal theory and the new Tait equation method to analyze MIP data of coal, finding that simultaneous interparticle void filling affects 1.9-3.4% of total intrusion volumes, while matrix compression can account for 46.72-80.41%. When combined with low pressure N2 gas adsorption, the TE method provides TPV values closer to the BJH model for pore sizes in the range of 33-320 nm, while the MC method is more suitable for correcting smaller pore sizes in MIP data.

A comparative study of permeability prediction for Eocene sandstones-Part 1: Application of modified Swanson models to mercury injection capillary pressure and nuclear magnetic resonance data

Zeyu Zhang et al.

Summary: The research evaluates the use of MICP and NMR to analyze the pore radius distribution of rocks, showing the importance of PRD in permeability prediction models. The Swanson method, based on the apex point of the capillary pressure curve, demonstrates relatively accurate predictive performance for k values. Transforming NMR relaxation time distribution into PRD also allows for good prediction of k values.
