Automated analysis of microplastics based on vibrational spectroscopy: are we measuring the same metrics?

Mingtan Dong et al.

Summary: The traditional manual analysis of microplastics has its drawbacks, such as being labor-intensive, inaccurate in identification, and lacking uniformity. Automated analysis strategies based on vibrational spectroscopy, including laser direct infrared, Raman, and focal plane array-Fourier transform infrared imaging, have been developed. Each strategy has its advantages and limitations in terms of quantification, detection limit, size measurement, and material identification accuracy and speed.

Synthetic polymers in personal care and cosmetics products (PCCPs) as a source of microplastic (MP) pollution

Nawalamudiyanselaya Semini Kushara Nawalage et al.

Summary: This study revealed the presence of microplastic-favoring chemicals in PCCPs in the Sri Lankan market, which poses a threat to the environment. Toothpaste was found to be the most commonly used product, while face cleanser had the lowest usage. A total of 21.4 trillion microplastic particles are released into the environment annually. Further assessments are needed to evaluate the impact.

Contributions of Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy in microplastic pollution research: A review

S. Veerasingam et al.

Summary: This review highlights the extensive use of Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) spectroscopy in microplastic (MP) pollution research since 2004. Over 400 research papers on FTIR techniques in MP pollution research from 2010 to 2019 were identified, focusing on MP characterization, fate, and transport in various environmental matrices. The review provides insights into the current application of FTIR spectroscopy in MP research and future challenges for understanding the risk of MPs.

Drinking plastics? - Quantification and qualification of microplastics in drinking water distribution systems by mu FTIR and Py-GCMS

Inga V. Kirstein et al.

Summary: The concentrations of microplastics in potable water are debated, likely due to variations in water quality, quantification methods, and analytical standards. Reliable methods for assessing microplastics in drinking water are lacking, but proper assessment requires quality assurance, adequate volume assessment, and understanding of analytical method differences. The study used validated techniques to assess microplastics in drinking water distribution systems and found low contents, suggesting low risk to human health.

The effect of deformation of absorbing scatterers on Mie-type signatures in infrared microspectroscopy

Maren Anna Brandsrud et al.

Summary: The study found that chaotic scattering accelerates the disappearance of Mie ripples and showed that the presence of absorption and the high numerical aperture of infrared microscopes cannot explain the absence of ripples in most measurements of biological samples.

Excitation Mechanisms of Whispering Gallery Modes with Direct Light Scattering

Xavier Zambrana-Puyalto et al.

Summary: Whispering gallery modes are light modes that arise in cylindrically symmetric structures, with intensity profile strongly confined around the interface. Analytical demonstration shows that the coupling mechanism is related to angular momentum matching between inner WGMs of the sphere and incident beam. The model quantitatively predicts optical coupling efficiency for any tangential position of the incident beam.

A microfluidic chip enables fast analysis of water microplastics by optical spectroscopy

Ahmed A. Elsayed et al.

Summary: A micro-optofluidic platform is proposed for fast quantification of microplastic particles in drinking water, utilizing micro-reservoirs and filters for quick imaging and spectroscopy. Passive size sorting and flow cytometry are used to further analyze and differentiate the particles based on size and chemical nature. Validation using model samples demonstrates the feasibility of this platform for microplastic detection.
