Efficiency of phosphorylated mandua starch in matrix tablet for targeted release of mesalamine in colon

Mayank Kumar Malik et al.

Summary: The present study developed matrix tablets composed of phosphorylated mandua starch and coated with Eudragit S 100 for colon-targeted delivery of mesalamine. The coated tablets showed cumulative drug release rates of 30.93%, 17.62%, and 16.25% within 8 hours in simulated intestinal fluid. In vivo gamma scintigraphic images demonstrated successful drug delivery to the colon, with transit times of 90-120 minutes for the gastric phase and 280-420 minutes for the intestinal phase.

Significance of Chemically Derivatized Starch as Drug Carrier in Developing Novel Drug Delivery Devices

Mayank Kumar Malik et al.

Summary: The delivery of therapeutics using synthetic polymers is challenging due to their toxic nature, potential immune response, and limited bioavailability. As a result, natural polymers, particularly starches, are being investigated as safer alternatives. In order to optimize their properties, the modification of starches has become necessary. These modified starches have shown promise in improving solubility, stability, and bioavailability of incorporated drugs, while minimizing toxicities. This review examines the current understanding of starch structure, chemical modification methods, and their applications in drug delivery systems such as tablets, hydrogels, and patches. The information presented in this review can serve as a reference for future studies on chemically modified starch as excipients in drug carriers.

Improvement in Digestion Resistibility of Mandua Starch (Eleusine coracana) after Cross-Linking with Epichlorohydrin

Mayank Kumar Malik et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the physical and chemical properties of mandua starch after treatment with epichlorohydrin, and investigated its digestion resistibility through experiments with simulated digestive fluids. The results showed significant changes in the swelling capacity, solubility, and degree of cross-linking of mandua starch after treatment, resulting in the formation of resistant starch. This study provides potential applications for the development of food, nutraceuticals, and pharmaceutical preparations.

Effect of Esterification Conditions on the Physicochemical Properties of Phosphorylated Potato Starch

Jacek Roznowski et al.

Summary: This study aimed to evaluate the effects of temperature and duration on phosphorylated potato starch. Phosphorylation caused minor color changes and affected the structure and recovery rate of starch. The modified starches showed lower retrogradation tendency and modification time was a better indicator of progress than phosphorus content.
