The rapid pyrolysis feature and evolution of heteroatoms of Indonesian oil sand

Shouyi Li et al.

Summary: The rapid pyrolysis behavior of Indonesian oil sand was studied, and the organic structure model and occurrence of heteroatoms were proposed. The liquid products consisted mainly of aromatic esters and aliphatic hydrocarbons. More stable heteroatom compounds were released into the liquid product with increasing pyrolysis temperature, while sulfur and oxygen on the aliphatic side chain were transformed into gaseous products. Sulfur-containing compounds in the oil sand minerals converted from sulfate to metal sulfide. Heteroatom compounds in organic matter transferred to gaseous or liquid products, while those in inorganic substances remained in a more stable form in the residual sand.

Structure characteristics and evolution mechanism of oil sands bitumen at Karamay, Xinjiang(China)

Zhichao Wang et al.

Summary: This paper investigated the chemical structure and thermal evolution mechanism of Karamay oil sands bitumen through experimental characterization. The results showed that the pyrolysis of KBS belonged to a parallel reaction, with aliphatic groups undergoing thermal cracking reactions to produce light oil, oxygen-containing functional groups contributing to the production of CO and CO2, and the aromatic structure condensing into a challenging to decompose coke during pyrolysis.

Pyrolysis Characteristics of Indonesian Oil Sand in a Fixed Bed

Chunxia Jia et al.

Summary: The temperature and heating rate were found to have significant effects on the pyrolysis products of Indonesian oil sand. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy revealed the presence of four functional group bands in the oil sand. Additionally, the study showed that temperature influenced the total pore volume and specific surface area of char, while the heating rate did not significantly affect the development of pore structure. This research provides a theoretical foundation for the effective exploitation and economical application of oil sand.

EDXRF analysis and risks assessment of potentially toxic elements in sand fraction (tailing) of Nigerian oil sands

Festus Mayowa Adebiyi et al.

Summary: The elemental composition of sand fraction of Nigerian oil sand was analyzed to assess human and ecological risks. The study found higher elemental concentrations in the sand fractions compared to Nigerian oil sands and bitumen, indicating potential environmental degradation and health risks upon indiscriminate disposal of tailings.

Toxic metals in oil sands: review of human health implications, environmental impact, and potential remediation using membrane-based approach

Odunayo T. Ore et al.

Summary: The increased energy demand has led to a shift towards unconventional resources, posing health and environmental risks due to the release of priority pollutants such as heavy metals during their exploitation. The toxicity of metals is determined by their nature and affinity for bonding with the silicate matrix. Membrane-based processes and integrated approaches are recommended for resource restoration and metal recovery.
