Composition and structural patterns of encroaching woody plant species along riparian zones of the Molopo River, North-West Province, South Africa

Summary: Woody plant encroachment is becoming increasingly problematic in arid and semi-arid ecosystems, posing serious threats to natural vegetation composition and structure. This study aimed to assess the composition and structural patterns of woody species in encroached and benchmark sites along the Molopo River. The results showed that the invasive species Prosopois velutina and indigenous species Senegalia mellifera indicated significant woody encroachment in the study sites, and there were significant differences in woody density near different villages.

Summary: In developed countries, biofuel development is driven by a desire to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and increase energy security, while in developing countries, interest in biofuel production is also fueled by energy security, rural development, and job creation. Despite the benefits of biofuels, concerns about their potential invasiveness exist. Recommendations for the Botswana government include improving cultivation of indigenous wild plants for biodiesel production, screening exotic species for invasive potential before large-scale cultivation, and developing management practices to mitigate invasion risks.
