Selected Extracts from High Mountain Plants as Potential Sunscreens with Antioxidant Capacity

Juan C. Mejia-Giraldo et al.

Summary: The photoprotective and antioxidant activities of extracts from six plant species collected in a high mountain ecosystem at 3150 m.a.s.l. were evaluated. Among these extracts, the extract of B. antioquensis showed significant photoprotection against UVA-UVB and excellent antioxidant activity. This suggests that B. antioquensis extract could be a valuable source for new UV filters with broad spectrum protection and antioxidant properties.

Photoprotection and Photostability of a New Lignin-Gelatin-Baccharis antioquensis-Based Hybrid Biomaterial

Juan C. Mejia-Giraldo et al.

Summary: This study aimed to develop a new hybrid biomaterial by combining lignin, gelatin, and natural extract into nanoparticles to improve the photoprotective capacity of a Baccharis antioquensis extract. The results showed that the hybrid nanoparticles exhibited good photostability and photoprotection, and could be potentially used in dermocosmetic formulations to enhance their sun protection factor (SPF).
