Genetic linkage maps and QTLs associated with fruit skin color and acidity in apple (Malus x domestica)

Sewon Oh et al.

Summary: Through constructing single-parental and integrated bi-parental genetic linkage maps using genotyping-by-sequencing (GBS)-derived single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) and simple sequence repeats (SSRs), genetic loci associated with fruit skin color and acidity were identified. The results showed that the single parental maps are important and have similar resolution to the integrated bi-parental map. Therefore, the parental genetic linkage maps can be used as reference maps for QTL analysis in apples.

Effect of Genetics and Climate on Apple Sugars and Organic Acids Profiles

Pierre Mignard et al.

Summary: This study evaluated 155 apple samples over a five-year period, analyzing four individual sugars and seven organic acids and studying the influence of genetics and climate on apple characteristics. The results showed that genetics had the strongest effect, with clear differences between different genetic groups, while climate had a more equal effect on different genetic groups for certain compounds. Precipitation, temperature range, and solar radiation were found to be negatively and positively correlated with the concentrations of sugars and acids. The study also highlighted the importance of the geographic region where the orchard is located.

Genetic Identity and Diversity of Apple Accessions within a Candidate Collection for the Norwegian National Clonal Germplasm Repository

Mekjell Meland et al.

Summary: To conserve and utilize traditional apple germplasm in Norway, a collection of apple heritage cultivars was established and genotyped using molecular markers. The study identified synonyms, homonyms, and duplicates within the collections and found that using a larger set of markers provided a more accurate characterization. The collection was determined to hold a key part of the overall genetic diversity of Norwegian apple germplasm and provided a detailed insight into its genetic structure.

Malate metabolism mediated by the cytoplasmic malate dehydrogenase gene MdcyMDH affects sucrose synthesis in apple fruit

Lihua Zhang et al.

Summary: The types and proportions of soluble sugar and organic acid significantly affect the flavor quality of fruit. This study found that overexpression of cytoplasmic malate dehydrogenase genes not only increased the malate content but also increased the sucrose concentration in transgenic apple calli and mature fruit. Further analysis showed that this regulation may occur through the alteration of starch metabolism and gluconeogenesis.

Study of polyphenols, antioxidant capacity and minerals for the valorisation of ancient apple cultivars from Northeast Italy

Raffaella Preti et al.

Summary: Nutritional properties and quality of apple fruits can be influenced by secondary metabolite contents such as phytochemicals and mineral elements. Ancient apple cultivars in Northeast Italy showed higher levels of healthful compounds and antioxidant capacity compared to commercial cultivars, with a strong correlation with total phenolic content. The ancient apples were characterized by higher levels of catechins and flavonols in the pulp, and higher potassium and magnesium content in macro elements. These findings support the valorization of ancient local apple cultivars for their genetic biodiversity and nutraceutical properties.

Evaluation of Physiological Characteristics, Soluble Sugars, Organic Acids and Volatile Compounds in 'Orin' Apples (Malus domestica) at Different Ripening Stages

Shunbo Yang et al.

Summary: During the ripening process of 'Orin' apple fruits, the weight, size, and total soluble solids increased gradually, while the titratable acidity decreased and the fruit firmness decreased. The content of soluble sugars reached its peak at 180 days after full bloom, with malic acid being the most abundant organic acid. Ester compounds such as ethyl butyrate, hexyl propanoate, hexyl acetate, and butyl acetate with high odor activity values may contribute to the distinctive aroma of 'Orin' apples. This study aims to provide information on the flavor characteristics of 'Orin' apples to promote this cultivar for marketing and processing in the future.

Genetic origin and climate determine fruit quality and antioxidant traits on apple (Malus x domestica Borkh)

P. Mignard et al.

Summary: The study showed that local apple varieties generally have higher average content of antioxidants and RAC compared to foreign and commercial ones, while bioactive compounds tend to decrease with higher temperatures and increase with higher solar radiation. Statistical analyses highlighted differences between groups and emphasized accessions and climate as main factors affecting metabolite profiles and fruit characteristics.
