Molecular mechanisms of oxidative stress in asthma

Charalambos Michaeloudes et al.

Summary: The lungs are exposed to reactive oxygen species (ROS) produced from various sources, including inhalation of oxygen, smoke, and air pollutants. Intracellular ROS play a role in cell signaling and are regulated by various cellular components. In asthma, over-production of ROS and impaired antioxidant responses lead to oxidative stress, which contributes to airway inflammation and hyper-responsiveness. Understanding the complex role of ROS in asthma pathogenesis is important for developing targeted redox therapies.

Corticosteroid resistance in asthma: Cellular and molecular mechanisms

Gaetano Caramori et al.

Summary: Inhaled glucocorticoids (GCs) are widely used to treat asthma patients. They prevent the activation of immune and inflammatory cells in the lungs and have significant effects on airway structure. However, some patients show poor asthma control even with high doses of GCs, which may be due to GC resistance.

Overview of the Mechanisms of Oxidative Stress: Impact in Inflammation of the Airway Diseases

Giusy Daniela Albano et al.

Summary: Inflammation in the human lung is often caused by various stimuli such as cigarette smoke and environmental pollutants. Oxidative stress plays a crucial role in promoting lung inflammation and the development of chronic airway diseases. This review provides an overview of the interplay between oxidative stress and inflammation in airway diseases.

The effects of Nigella sativa on respiratory, allergic and immunologic disorders, evidence from experimental and clinical studies, a comprehensive and updated review

Saeideh Saadat et al.

Summary: This comprehensive review article examines the traditional use of N. sativa seed and its constituents for their pharmacological effects. Experimental and clinical studies suggest that extracts and constituents of N. sativa have preventive and therapeutic effects on respiratory, allergic, and immunologic disorders. These effects are attributed to mechanisms such as bronchodilation, antioxidant, immunomodulation, and anti-inflammatory properties.
