The influence of NaCl salinity on evapotranspiration, yield traits, antioxidant status, and mineral composition of lettuce grown under deficit irrigation

Duran Yavuz et al.

Summary: This study investigated the responses of lettuce plants grown under water stress to increased sodium chloride (NaCl) stress. The results showed that increasing NaCl concentration in water decreased lettuce's evapotranspiration and yield. However, it was found that irrigation with saline water with a threshold electrical conductivity of 1.5 dS/m did not result in yield loss for lettuce, while a salinity of more than 4.5 dS/m led to significant yield losses.

Mycorrhization changes the antioxidant response and chemical profile of Lippia alba (Verbenaceae) essential oil under salinity conditions

Luiz Palhares Neto et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the influence of salinity and mycorrhizal association on the physiological responses and essential oil production of Lippia alba. Salinity affected various physiological processes and increased essential oil production. Mycorrhization reduced the negative effects of salinity and enhanced antioxidative enzyme activity and alteration in essential oil composition. L. alba plants can be cultivated in moderately saline environments, and mycorrhization can induce tolerance responses and secondary metabolite production.

Physiological, Morphological and Biochemical Responses of Exogenous Hydrogen Sulfide in Salt-Stressed Tomato Seedlings

Ertan Yildirim et al.

Summary: Salinity causes significant yield and quality losses in agricultural production, leading to major economic losses worldwide. Hydrogen sulfide (H2S) plays a crucial role in alleviating physiological and metabolic processes in plants, increasing tolerance to abiotic stress conditions. A study examined the effects of H2S treatments on tomato seedlings to mitigate the harmful effects of salt stress. The results showed that H2S treatment increased stress tolerance in tomato seedlings by regulating mineral element and hormone content, as well as enhancing photosynthetic activity.

Moderation of nitrogen availability through the application of pyrolyzed and unpyrolyzed organic materials in saline water irrigated soil

Manpreet Singh Mavi et al.

Summary: Soil application of pyrolyzed biomass (biochar) as a sole nutrient supplier is limited due to the negative impact on N mineralization process. This study found that increasing salinity reduced N mineralization, but the combined application of pyrolyzed and unpyrolyzed organic materials enhanced mineralized N content. It is recommended to use biochar in conjunction with unpyrolized materials to ensure prolonged availability of N in a saline environment.

Irrigation of soil with reclaimed wastewater acts as a buffer of microbial taxonomic and functional biodiversity

Paula Guedes et al.

Summary: The use of reclaimed wastewater for irrigation in agriculture can reduce water consumption and provide nutrients to soil, but may also lead to soil contamination by CECs. Short-term irrigation of reclaimed wastewater did not significantly alter soil properties and helped maintain soil microbial diversity and functioning.

The effect of irrigation water salinity on the morph-physiological and biochemical properties of spinach under deficit irrigation conditions

Duran Yavuz et al.

Summary: This study investigated the responses of spinach to different water salinities and water stress levels, and found that spinach has good adaptability to high salinities and water deficits. Water salinity and water stress significantly affected the physiological and yield parameters of spinach. Therefore, it is necessary to manage irrigation water salinity and quantity in agricultural production.

Biochar Amendment Combined with Straw Mulching Increases Winter Wheat Yield by Optimizing Soil Water-Salt Condition under Saline Irrigation

Zemin Zhang et al.

Summary: Under saline water irrigation, using a straw-returning mode can promote winter wheat production. Returning straw to fields increases soil organic carbon content, decreases soil bulk density, increases soil moisture content, and lowers salt levels, resulting in significant yield increase for wheat. The combined application of straw mulching and biochar amendment achieves the best effect.

Effect of brackish water irrigation on the movement of water and salt in salinized soil

Panpan Zhang et al.

Summary: This article discusses the importance of reasonable utilization of brackish water in China to alleviate water scarcity. One-dimensional brackish water infiltration experiments were conducted to study the effects of brackish water irrigation on water and salt transport in saline-alkali soils. The results showed that irrigation with brackish water had a positive impact on soil infiltration capacity and salt removal, with the specific effects varying depending on the salinity of the irrigation water.

Summary: The study shows that using secondary treated wastewater (STW) for irrigation of fruit trees does not lead to contamination of heavy metals and microbes in fruit tissues, and the concentration of heavy metals in fruits is below international limits. However, the total bacterial count on plants irrigated with STW is higher than those irrigated with tap water.

David Zalacain et al.

Summary: The use of reclaimed water for irrigation in urban areas of Madrid showed minimal impact on micronutrient concentration in soil and plants, with levels remaining within safe limits even after 15 years. Soil organic matter and pH played significant roles in the bioavailability and transfer of micronutrients. Despite differences in irrigation duration, there were no major disparities in micronutrient concentration between parks irrigated with reclaimed water.

Summary: The study found that the dispersion of soil in the seasonally frozen area is mainly influenced by the physicochemical properties of the soil and salt migration. In winter, salt moves from the lower soil layer to the upper layer along with water, while in spring, water evaporation causes the sodium ion content in the surface soil to increase, enhancing soil dispersibility.
