Latest biotechnology tools and targets for improving abiotic stress tolerance in protein legumes

Alexandre Detain et al.

Summary: This article reviews recent advances in biotechnological approaches for improving the tolerance of protein legumes to abiotic stresses such as drought, high salinity, heat and cold, and heavy metal stress. In addition to improvements obtained mainly through transgenesis, the application of tools such as CRISPR/Cas and RNA interference in legumes in the context of abiotic stress tolerance is also discussed, along with a suggested path for gene control in legume plants, organs, or cells by these tools. Promising molecular targets, perspectives, and future directions for enhancing abiotic stress tolerance are also discussed.

Efficient production of transgene-free, gene-edited carrot plants via protoplast transformation

Chandler M. Meyer et al.

Summary: This study presents a method for efficiently producing transgene-free, gene-edited carrot plants. The approach involves using PEG-mediated transformation and protoplast culture to induce targeted mutations, resulting in a large number of transgene-free, gene-edited carrot plants.

Copper nanoparticles enhanced surface disinfection, induction and maturation of somatic embryos in tuberous begonias (Begonia x tuberhybrida Voss) cultured in vitro

Huynh Gia Bao et al.

Summary: The sterilization effectiveness of copper nanoparticles (CuNPs) was investigated for ex vitro tuberous begonias. CuNPs proved to be effective in surface disinfection and improved somatic embryogenesis, antioxidant activity, and carbohydrate content compared to common disinfectants. Plantlets derived from CuNPs-treated explants showed no difference in morphology, in vitro rooting, and acclimatization stages.

Protoplast Regeneration and Its Use in New Plant Breeding Technologies

Kelsey M. M. Reed et al.

Summary: Gene-editing technology has great potential in accelerating crop trait improvement to meet the needs of a growing global population, but the recovery of successfully edited plants remains a bottleneck in the application of new plant breeding technologies. The methods most suitable for achieving the desired outcome vary depending on species' genotype and targeted genetic changes. Hence, developing and improving multiple strategies for delivery and regeneration is crucial in approaching each application from different angles.
