Selection for resistance to pirimiphos-methyl, permethrin and spinosad in a field strain of Sitophilus oryzae: resistance risk assessment, cross-resistance potential and synergism of insecticides

Tiyyabah Khan et al.

Summary: Indiscriminate use of insecticides in food storage facilities can have harmful effects on the environment and non-targeted organisms, potentially leading to resistance development in insect pests and contamination of stored food. This study found high risks of resistance development to pirimiphos-methyl, permethrin, and spinosad under consistent selection pressure, but no cross-resistance was observed among different insecticides.

Lethal and behavioural effects of a green insecticide against an invasive polyphagous fruit fly pest and its safety to mammals

Giovanni Benelli et al.

Summary: The study found that carlina oxide has high toxicity to medfly and can alter its aggressive behavior direction, but not affect aggression intensity and duration. In addition, acute toxicity studies on rats showed that the essential oil has minimal effects on the stomach, liver, and kidney, making it relatively safe for non-target mammals.

Resistance to grain protectants and synergism in Pakistani strains of Sitophilus oryzae (Coleoptera: Curculionidae)

Tiyyabah Khan et al.

Summary: The widespread use of insecticides for insect pest management in storage facilities and food industries has led to insecticide resistance becoming a frequent issue worldwide. However, little research has been done on this issue in Pakistan. This study surveyed insecticide resistance to four different insecticides in field strains of Sitophilus oryzae collected from various locations in Punjab, Pakistan. The study found the presence of resistance, as well as the possibility of metabolic mechanisms of resistance.

Carlina acaulis essential oil: a candidate product for agrochemical industry due to its pesticidal capacity

Nickolas G. Kavallieratos et al.

Summary: Carlina acaulis essential oil (EO) showed high efficacy against several pests of medical and agricultural importance, including Acarus siro, Alphitobius diaperinus, and Oryzaephilus surinamensis. The EO led to high mortality rates in both adults and larvae of these pests. The efficacy of C. acaulis EO was found to be higher than that of pirimiphos-methyl, a conventional insecticide. This suggests that C. acaulis EO could be a reliable and eco-friendly alternative for pest management strategies.
