Spatial distribution patterns and predictors of fish beta-diversity in a large dam-free tributary from a Neotropical floodplain

Augusto Frota et al.

Summary: Recent interest has been growing in understanding the variation of fish species composition between locations through beta-diversity. This study identified three major breaks delimiting fish assemblages in the Ivai River basin, with the middle section showing the least differentiation. The dissimilarity in fish species composition was moderately associated with geo-climatic variables.

Environment regimes play an important role in structuring trait- and taxonomy-based temporal beta diversity of riverine diatoms

Naicheng Wu et al.

Summary: A sound understanding of community changes and their driving forces is crucial for biodiversity conservation and ecology research. In this study, the researchers examined the trait- and taxonomy-based temporal beta diversity of riverine diatoms and investigated the relative roles of hydrology, metal ions, and nutrients in shaping these diversity patterns. They found that trait-based and taxonomy-based diversity provided complementary ecological information and the inclusion of environmental factors increased the explained variation. Their findings shed light on the importance of temporal beta diversity and its components for studying diversity patterns in riverine diatoms.

Land conversion induced by urbanization leads to taxonomic and functional homogenization of a river macroinvertebrate metacommunity

Zhenyuan Liu et al.

Summary: Conversion of forests to urban land-use during urbanization is a major cause of biotic homogenization in freshwater ecosystems. This study explores the patterns of taxonomic and functional beta diversities in urban and forest rivers in Shenzhen, China. The results show that taxonomic beta diversity declines more significantly than functional beta diversity in urban rivers, driven by decreased species/traits replacement. Both deterministic and stochastic processes affect beta diversity, with stochastic processes being more important in urban rivers.

Relative importance of climate and spatial processes in shaping species composition, functional structure and beta diversity of phytoplankton in a large river

Alexander G. Rusanov et al.

Summary: Spatial variables were more influential than climatic factors in controlling species and functional group composition, with climatic heterogeneity showing a significant positive relationship with beta diversity. However, there was no significant relationship between spatial extent and beta diversity, indicating that spatial effects on beta-diversity were affected by anthropogenic disturbance.

Environmental filtration and dispersal limitation explain different aspects of beta diversity in desert plant communities

Dong Hu et al.

Summary: The study found that in desert plant communities, species beta diversity and its components values decreased with the increase of sampling scale. Environmental filtration and dispersal limitation have different impacts on beta diversity at different sampling scales, with different contributions of the two components on beta diversity observed.

Damming affects riverine macroinvertebrate metacommunity dynamics: Insights from taxonomic and functional beta diversity

Jun Wang et al.

Summary: The study reveals that both taxonomic and functional beta diversities of macroinvertebrates in a dammed river were higher than those in an undammed river, with the replacement component contributing most to the overall beta diversity. In the dry season, the taxonomic richness difference component was significantly higher in the dammed river, but no difference was found in the functional richness difference component.

Beta diversity of stream insects differs between boreal and subtropical regions, but land use does not generally cause biotic homogenization

Danielle K. Petsch et al.

Summary: Previous studies have shown mixed results on the relationship between beta diversity and latitude. Our research found higher taxonomic beta diversity among subtropical streams compared to boreal streams, while functional beta diversity was similar between the two regions. Total land use was positively correlated with taxonomic and functional beta diversity among subtropical streams, while local environmental heterogeneity was positively correlated with beta diversity among boreal streams.

Meadow degradation increases spatial turnover rates of the fungal community through both niche selection and dispersal limitation

Yingcheng Wang et al.

Summary: This study systematically analyzed the spatial turnover rates of soil prokaryotic and fungal communities in degraded and undegraded alpine meadows, revealing the influence of soil and vegetation factors on the diversity of fungal community, as well as the changes in the community assembly mechanism during meadow degradation. The results showed that both environmental selection and dispersal limitation play important roles in shaping the fungal community structure under degradation, with dispersal limitation becoming more prominent as distance increases. This study provides new insights into soil microbial responses to vegetation changes in alpine areas.

Distance decay of benthic macroinvertebrate communities in amountain river network: Do dispersal routes and dispersal ability matter?

Zhengfei Li et al.

Summary: Environmental heterogeneity and physical distances play important roles in driving beta diversity in montane streams, with environmental gradients generally prevailing over physical distances. Species replacement is more influenced by environmental gradients, while richness difference is more affected by physical distances.

The role of environmental conditions, climatic factors and spatial processes in driving multiple facets of stream macroinvertebrate beta diversity in a climatically heterogeneous mountain region

Xiaoming Jiang et al.

Summary: This study focused on the multifaceted beta diversities of lotic macro invertebrates in streams along the northern and southern slopes of the Qinling Mountains. Results showed that streams draining the north slope had lower beta diversity values compared to those draining the south slope, attributed to distinct climatic and environmental conditions. Spatial variables were found to be the most important in shaping beta diversity, followed by local environmental and climatic variables. Community-environment relationships differed among the diversity facets and their components, highlighting the importance of an integrative approach for biodiversity management and conservation in aquatic ecosystems.
