Developmental Language Disorder Is Associated With Slower Processing Across Domains: A Meta-Analysis of Time-Based Tasks

Nicole M. Zapparrata et al.

Summary: Individuals with developmental language disorder (DLD) demonstrate slower processing speed in time-based tasks, which is not restricted to linguistic and/or auditory tasks. This meta-analysis shows that individuals with DLD have longer response times in both verbal and nonverbal tasks, which may contribute to difficulties in language, motor skills, and executive functioning.

Summary: This study investigated the contribution of age-related cognitive abilities to multisensory motor reaction times in elementary school-age children. The results showed that visual working memory and nonverbal intelligence were the strongest predictors of multisensory processing.

The development of brain rhythms at rest and its impact on vocabulary acquisition

Xiangyun Meng et al.

Summary: By analyzing resting state EEG data of children, it was found that brain wave power changes over time, with theta waves particularly important for expressive vocabulary. Furthermore, developmental changes in brain waves can be used as sensitive biomarkers to assess vocabulary development in school-age children.

Receptive and expressive language ability differentially support symbolic understanding over time: Picture comprehension in late talking and typically developing children

Rachael W. Cheung et al.

Summary: The study found that in the early stages of child development, receptive and expressive vocabulary play different roles in understanding symbols, and late talking (LT) children may perform less well in picture comprehension tasks compared to typically developing (TD) children. As time progresses, LT children may experience delays in developing picture comprehension skills.

Cognitive predictors of language abilities in primary school children: A cascaded developmental view

Joana Acha et al.

Summary: This study investigated the longitudinal relationship between children's domain-general cognitive constraints underlying phonological and sentence processing development in a big sample of typically developing children. The findings showed that non-linguistic processing speed had a concurrent effect on phonological skills, and phonology had a powerful effect on the child's sentence processing abilities concurrently and longitudinally. These findings support a cascaded cognitive view of language development and pose important challenges for evaluation and intervention strategies in childhood.

The relationships between language, working memory and rapid naming in children with mild to moderate hearing loss

Merve Ikiz et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between language, working memory, and rapid naming skills in children with mild to moderate sensorineural hearing loss (MMHL). The results showed that language skills were moderately correlated with verbal memory and negatively correlated with rapid automatized naming duration. Language level was also positively correlated with verbal short-term memory, verbal working memory, and verbal memory levels. Additionally, rapid automatized naming level was negatively correlated with language level, verbal working memory, verbal short-term memory, and verbal memory levels. These findings suggest that language, verbal working memory, and rapid naming skills are closely related in children with MMHL.

Age-related decrease in motor contribution to multisensory reaction times in primary school children

Areej A. Alhamdan et al.

Summary: The contribution of motor development to measures of multisensory and visuomotor processing tasks in young school age children was investigated, showing age-related differences. The results suggest that motor development plays a more significant role in multisensory facilitation compared to visual sensory system development. Additionally, multisensory integration may continue into late childhood/early adolescence.

A Role for Visual Memory in Vocabulary Development: A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis

Hayley E. Pickering et al.

Summary: This systematic review and meta-analysis examined the association between visual memory and vocabulary development in children aged 2-12 years. The study found that tasks relying on ventral visual stream processing were moderately associated with vocabulary, while tasks associated with dorsal stream processing and executive judgment tasks showed weak correlations with vocabulary.

Neuro-Behavioral Correlates of Executive Dysfunctions in Dyslexia Over Development From Childhood to Adulthood

Rola Farah et al.

Summary: Dyslexia is a neurobiological learning disability in the reading domain, leading to difficulties in academia and cognitive and emotional challenges for individuals. Executive functions play a crucial role in language and reading acquisition, showing abnormalities in individuals with dyslexia. Adding an EF assessment to neuropsychological testing is recommended for early intervention, and EF training should be considered for comprehensive outcomes.

Top-down task-specific determinants of multisensory motor reaction time enhancements and sensory switch costs

Ayla Barutchu et al.

Summary: This study investigated the relationship between multisensory processing, task relevance, and sensory switching. The results showed that congruent multisensory stimuli led to faster responses, while incongruent multisensory stimuli resulted in slower response times. Top-down processes related to task relevance were found to play a significant role in multisensory motor enhancements and sensory switch costs.

The Age-Related Changes in Speed of Visual Perception, Visual Verbal and Visuomotor Performance, and Nonverbal Intelligence During Early School Years

Rana J. Alghamdi et al.

Summary: The study found that the speed and accuracy of information processing in children develop with age, but only RAN and SLURP rates show significant improvement with years of schooling. RAN and SLURP also correlated significantly with nonverbal IQ scores, while months of formal schooling provide additional contributions to specific skills' processing speed development.

Universal strategies for the improvement of expressive language skills in the primary classroom: A systematic review

Keeley L. Dobinson et al.

Summary: Oral language skills are crucial for children's educational success and positive life outcomes, but many children, especially those from economically deprived areas, struggle with speaking and listening. A systematic review evaluates existing evidence on universal approaches to support children's language skills, identifying interactive book reading, structured vocabulary programs, and other methods as effective interventions to enhance oracy skills.
