How Is Working Memory Related to Reading Comprehension in Italian Monolingual and Bilingual Children?

Margherita Orsolini et al.

Summary: This study examined the role of working memory resources in reading comprehension, focusing on tasks related to storage of verbal information, the interaction between central executive and phonological store, and the storage of bound semantic content in the episodic buffer. The performance in these tasks was analyzed in relation to text decoding, listening comprehension, and reading comprehension. The participants included monolingual and bilingual children enrolled in an Italian primary school. Regression analyses indicated that reading accuracy and listening comprehension were associated with reading comprehension for both monolingual and bilingual children. However, the indirect effects of working memory on reading comprehension were observed only in monolingual children. The implications of these findings for text reading and comprehension in monolinguals and bilinguals are discussed.

Socioeconomic status and social anxiety: attentional control as a key missing variable?

Nele Claes et al.

Summary: This study examines the relationship between attentional control and social anxiety in relation to socioeconomic status. The findings suggest that there is a positive association between objective socioeconomic status and attentional control, and attentional control is related to social anxiety.

Bilingualism and Executive Attention: Evidence From Studies of Proactive and Reactive Control

Giacomo Spinelli et al.

Summary: Research suggests that the bilingual advantage is more likely to manifest in the domain of executive attention rather than inhibition. Through testing with two conflict adaptation paradigms, it was found that congruency effects are reduced when the proportion of congruent to incongruent items is smaller, indicating a potential association between bilingualism and greater reliance on reactive control.

Is bilingualism associated with better working memory capacity? A meta-analysis

Summary: Research suggests that bilinguals have a slight advantage in working memory, especially when using the second language in verbal working memory tasks. However, studies on bilingual advantage show inconsistent results, and future research should consider individual differences within bilingual groups.

Summary: This study found that EF performance was uniquely associated with academic and social impairment in children diagnosed with ADHD, particularly in reading, written expression, and math. ADHD symptoms were more strongly correlated with impairment in social relationships, organized peer activities, and classroom behaviors.

Aging in cognitive control of social processing: evidence from the attention network test

Francesca Federico et al.

Summary: Aging is associated with impairment of attentional network functioning, but social information can help modulate this decline, especially in terms of executive attention and alerting. As age increases, orienting attention scores progressively increase in the presence of social stimuli.
