A methodological framework for optimal siting of offshore wind farms: A case study on the island of Crete

Pandora Gkeka-Serpetsidaki et al.

Summary: The research addresses the issue of sustainable siting for Offshore Wind Farms, taking into consideration the specific characteristics of Crete Island and the unexploited offshore wind potential. Through analysis, the final available areas suitable for OWF construction and the potential energy capacity were determined, making a significant contribution to achieving island energy self-sufficiency.

Research on the rotor speed and aerodynamic characteristics of a dynamic yawing wind turbine with a short-time uniform wind direction variation

Shuang Zhao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the rotor speed and aerodynamic characteristics of wind turbines under short-term wind direction variation through experiments and computational fluid dynamics simulations. The results show that the rotor speed decreases due to the short-term wind direction variation, and assuming a constant rotor speed overestimates the average torque and underestimates the torque variation. This has significant implications for the operational performance and blade loading of wind turbines.

The impact of tropical cyclones on potential offshore wind farms

Kanzis L. Mattu et al.

Summary: The climate crisis has sparked a growing interest in renewable energy, particularly wind energy. This study focuses on Mexico, a sub-tropical country at risk of damage from tropical cyclones, and investigates potential areas for offshore wind farms with high generating potential and low risk. Through data analysis, it is found that the Pacific coast sites in Mexico are preferred locations for the development of offshore wind farms due to lower tropical cyclone risk and the magnitude of the associated hazard.

Reliability and fragility assessment of offshore floating wind turbine subjected to tropical cyclone hazard

C. Sheng et al.

Summary: This study presents a simulation-based procedure to assess the fragility and reliability of offshore wind turbines under tropical cyclone hazard. Results suggest that the failure probability of the WT could be very high if installed near the coastline of mainland China, with tower buckling and platform overturning being the main contributors to failure. Increased design environmental loads are needed to achieve a further reduction in failure probability.
