Obliquity forcing of lake-level changes and organic carbon burial during the Late Paleozoic Ice Age

Ren Wei et al.

Summary: This study investigates the cyclostratigraphy and organic carbon burial processes in the Lucaogou Formation of the Early Permian Junggar Basin in order to understand the mechanisms behind the changes in inland lake levels during the Late Paleozoic Ice Age. The results demonstrate that variations in land-ocean water exchange, associated with changes in poleward flux of moisture, play a major role in regulating lake levels in the Northern Hemisphere during this period.

Development and controlling factors of shale lithofacies cycles in a continental rift basin: A case study of Es4u in the Boxing Subsag of Dongying Sag, Bohai Bay Basin, China

Zhengwei Fang et al.

Summary: Through the analysis of logging data interpretation, core and thin section observations, and geochemical elements analysis, the lithofacies cycles of the shale in the upper Es4 formation (Es-4 (u)) were studied. Various lithofacies types were identified, indicating different sedimentary environments. The lithofacies cycles were recognized at small, meso, and large scales.

Continental geological evidence for Solar System chaotic behavior in the Late Cretaceous

Huaichun Wu et al.

Summary: By analyzing a continental lacustrine sequence in the Songliao Basin, China, a 10.173 million year-long record of Earth's orbital parameters from 82.358 Ma to 92.531 Ma was reconstructed. It was found that there were two chaotic secular resonance transitions in the orbital motions of Earth and Mars from 85.2 Ma to 91.55 Ma, which may explain the occurrence of anoxic events in both marine and continental environments during this time.

Multi-Scale Natural Fracture Prediction in Continental Shale Oil Reservoirs: A Case Study of the Fengcheng Formation in the Mahu Sag, Junggar Basin, China

Xiaojun Wang et al.

Summary: This study predicts multi-scale fractures in continental shale oil reservoirs using seismic attributes, showing that fractures are more developed in the upper sweet spot and the density decreases with increasing primary-secondary fault distance.

Astronomical forced sequence infill of Early Cambrian Qiongzhusi organic-rich shale of Sichuan Basin, South China

Sibing Liu et al.

Summary: This study reports the evidence of Milankovitch cycles in the Early Cambrian Qiongzhusi Formation in the Sichuan Basin. A floating timeline calibrated to stable eccentricity cycles was developed using logging data, and the astronomical time scale was anchored to the U/Pb Zircon age to establish an absolute timescale. Average spectral misfit and correlation coefficient analyses were used to measure the fitting of sedimentary cycles to astronomical periods and provide a sedimentation rate range. A sedimentary noise model was applied to detect high-resolution sea-level variations under the control of orbital forcing.

Oldest preserved sodium carbonate evaporite: Late Paleozoic Fengcheng Formation, Junggar Basin, NW China

Tingting Wang et al.

Summary: This paper presents a comprehensive data set on sodium carbonate evaporites found in the Fengcheng Formation in northwestern China, offering insights into their mineralogy, age, and formation processes. The study suggests that these deposits were formed in extensional grabens hosting hypersaline lakes, which were influenced by coeval volcanic activity.

Astronomical constraints on the development of alkaline lake during the Carboniferous-Permian Period in North Pangea

He Huang et al.

Summary: This study conducts a comprehensive cyclostratigraphic analysis of the Fengcheng Formation using high-resolution downhole logs, revealing 405-kyr eccentricity cycles and reconstructing lake-level changes in the terrestrial Junggar Basin under a high-precision time framework. The high-frequency lake-level variations possibly relate to ice sheets periodic waxing and waning and/or low latitude monsoonal circulation, emphasizing the strong influence of astronomical forcing on sedimentary processes.

Orderly coexistence and accumulation models of conventional and unconventional hydrocarbons in Lower Permian Fengcheng Formation, Mahu sag, Junggar Basin

Zhi Dongming et al.

Summary: This article examines the formation conditions, orderly coexisting characteristics, and accumulation models of conventional and unconventional reservoirs in the Lower Permian Fengcheng Formation in the Junggar Basin. It highlights the importance of exploring and developing both conventional and unconventional oil and gas resources together to achieve a breakthrough in the total petroleum system.
