Impacts of mineralogy and pore throat structure on the movable fluid of tight sandstone gas reservoirs in coal measure strata: A case study of the Shanxi formation along the southeastern margin of the Ordos Basin

Xinxu Dong et al.

Summary: Based on experimental results, this study explores the factors influencing movable fluid content and permeability. The study reveals that relatively large pores in the area are secondary dissolved pores, with high quartz and feldspar content facilitating the formation of these pores. The size of the pore throats and the mineralogical composition of the rock influence the proportion of movable fluid and its percolation capacity. The lithofacies with coarse to medium sandstone and a high proportion of submicron-and micron-scale pore throats have the highest movable fluid content and permeability.

Physical Properties, Pore-Throat Structure, Fractal Characteristics and Their Effects on the Gas-Bearing Capacity of Tight Sandstone: A Case Study from the Northern Tianhuan Depression, Ordos Basin, China

Hang Cui et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the mineral characteristics, reservoir storage types, and pore-throat network characteristics of Permian tight sandstone in the Upper Paleozoic of the Ordos Basin using various testing methods. A fractal method was employed to evaluate the reservoirs' microscopic heterogeneity. The results showed that the predominant storage space in the sandstone reservoir is intra-granular dissolution pores and kaolinite inter-crystalline pores, while primary pores and inter-granular dissolution pores form secondary spaces with low concentration and poor homogeneity of pore-throat size distribution. Based on porosity, pore-throat size distribution, and multifractal dimensions, the samples were classified into four categories. The piecewise fractal dimension was found to be associated with porosity, different pore size ranges, and pore-throat parameters. The influence of microscopic pore-throat heterogeneity on gas-bearing capacity varied among different sample types. The study also discussed the applicable pore size range for fractal analysis of tight sandstone and provided a novel idea for understanding the control of microscopic pore-throat heterogeneity on gas-bearing capacity.

Movable Fluid Distribution Characteristics and Microscopic Mechanism of Tight Reservoir in Yanchang Formation, Ordos Basin

Ke Wu et al.

Summary: This study investigates the characteristics of tight sandstone reservoirs in the Chang 4+5 reservoir of the Ordos Basin. The research reveals the pore throat structure and fluid distribution patterns. The results show that different reservoir types have different pore throat structures and movable fluid parameters. The degree of fluid utilization decreases in larger pore throats while remaining relatively stable in smaller pore throats. Permeability and sorting coefficients show a good correlation with movable fluid parameters.

Pore structure analysis and permeability prediction of shale oil reservoirs with HPMI and NMR: A case study of the Permian Lucaogou Formation in the Jimsar Sag, Junggar Basin, NW China

Fuyong Wang et al.

Summary: The pore structure characteristics and formation permeability of shale oil in the Lucaogou Formation were studied using high-pressure mercury injection, nuclear magnetic resonance, and fractal theory. The results showed that the capillary bundle model was the best for evaluating the fractal characteristics of pore structures. The fractal dimension from NMR data had poor correlation with core petrophysical parameters. The permeability prediction using the Swanson model was the most accurate.

Origin and distribution of an under-pressured tight sandstone reservoir: The Shaximiao Formation, Central Sichuan Basin

Qiaochu Wang et al.

Summary: Abnormal pressure analysis of tight gas reservoirs in the Middle Jurassic Shaximiao Formation in the Sichuan Basin revealed significant underpressure values, with origins traced back to elastic rebound and temperature reduction, while pressure increase was attributed to gas generating processes in source rocks of the Xujiahe and Ziliujing formations. The different pressure evolution processes in the western and eastern parts of the Central Sichuan Basin resulted in distinct pressure distributions.

Fractal Analysis of Tight Sandstone Petrophysical Properties in Unconventional Oil Reservoirs with NMR and Rate-Controlled Porosimetry

Fuyong Wang et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the fractal characteristics of pore spaces in tight sandstones from the Ordos Basin in China, using NMR and RCP techniques. It showed that the fractal dimensions of pore spaces with movable fluids were negatively correlated with permeability and reservoir quality index, with fractal dimensions approaching 3 indicating less favorable petrophysical properties. Different fractal models were compared for calculating fractal dimensions, with the 3D capillary model found to be the most accurate for evaluating tight sandstone properties.
