Recent Advances in Using Natural Antibacterial Additives in Bioactive Wound Dressings

Meysam Firoozbahr et al.

Summary: Wound care is a significant health issue globally, causing a financial burden of nearly $96.8 billion annually in the USA alone. Chronic non-healing wounds are especially problematic, and new and more efficient wound dressings are needed. The misuse of antibiotics and the lack of novel antibacterial agents have led to an increase in antimicrobial resistance, making the development of new antibacterial additives in wound dressings urgent. Natural products, particularly those derived from plants and endophytic fungi, show great potential in wound dressing applications as antibacterial agents.

Antibacterial Properties of Eucalyptus globulus Essential Oil against MRSA: A Systematic Review

Shakthi Elangovan et al.

Summary: Antimicrobial resistance poses a significant threat to public health and is a leading cause of global mortality and morbidity. Antibiotic misuse has resulted in the emergence of numerous resistant bacterial strains, including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), the most common resistant bacteria in humans. This systematic review investigates the antibacterial properties of Eucalyptus globulus essential oil against MRSA. The findings indicate that E. globulus essential oil exhibits antibacterial activity against MRSA and can be potentiated when used in combination with other agents, such as other essential oils and antibiotics.

Topical electrospun patches loaded with oil for effective gamma linoleic acid transport and skin hydration towards atopic dermatitis skincare

Ewa A. Sroczyk et al.

Summary: The study investigated the use of polyimide electrospun membranes as patches for atopic skin hydration, demonstrating their high stretchability, high membrane porosity, and potential for long-term skin hydration. Loading the membranes with blackcurrant seed oil rich in GLA allowed for long-term hydration, showing great potential for atopic skin care applications. Overall, the results indicate the suitability of electrospun polyimide patches for atopic skin care.

Photodynamic and photothermal co-driven CO-enhanced multi-mode synergistic antibacterial nanoplatform to effectively fight against biofilm infections

Xiaojun Cai et al.

Summary: A CO-enhanced multi-mode synergistic antibacterial nanoplatform (ICG&CO@G3KBPY) has been successfully developed to combat biofilm infections, with enhanced biofilm penetration, antibacterial activity, and anti-inflammatory effects. The platform rapidly generates CO under the co-driven effects of PTT and PDT, significantly improving the efficacy of biofilm eradication while alleviating inflammation caused by bacterial infection, PTT, and PDT. This study provides an efficient and safe multi-mode synergistic antibacterial strategy for treating biofilm infections.
