From Conventional Disinfection to Antibiotic Resistance Control-Status of the Use of Chlorine and UV Irradiation during Wastewater Treatment

Muhammad Umar

Summary: Extensive use of antibiotics has led to increased antibiotic resistance. Municipal wastewater treatment plants are major sources of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and genes in water. UV disinfection and chlorine-based AOPs are commonly used for disinfection, with the latter being increasingly used for targeting genes. This review analyzes their applications in wastewater treatment and highlights the need for research in addressing future disinfection challenges.

Role played by the environment in the emergence and spread of antimicrobial resistance (AMR) through the food chain

Konstantinos Koutsoumanis et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the role of food-producing environments in the emergence and spread of antimicrobial resistance in EU plant-based food production, terrestrial animals, and aquaculture. It identified key sources and transmission routes, highlighting the importance of fecal fertilizers, irrigation, and water sources. Highest priority bacteria and genes were identified in various sources, emphasizing the need for mitigation measures and data on ARB and ARG diversity. Further epidemiological studies on AMR and its control in food production environments at the EU level are urgently needed.

Metagenomic analysis of urban wastewater resistome and mobilome: A support for antimicrobial resistance surveillance in an endemic country

Erika A. Rodriguez et al.

Summary: This study utilized shotgun metagenomics and culture-based approaches to determine the bacterial community composition, resistome, and mobilome at a wastewater treatment plant in Antioquia, Colombia. The research found marked differences in bacterial community composition, resistome, and mobilome at different sampling points, indicating that wastewater treatment plants are hotspots for antimicrobial resistance.

Prevalence of extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Enterobacteriaceae in wastewater: a systematic review and meta-analysis

Nawel Zaatout et al.

Summary: Wastewater is a hotspot niche for multi-drug resistant and pathogenic bacteria, particularly Enterobacteriaceae-producing ESBL-E. This meta-analysis showed an increasing prevalence of ESBL-E in wastewater over time, with hospital wastewater being a significant reservoir. There is a need for developing new sewage treatment systems to reduce the introduction of resistant bacteria and antibiotic residues.

Prevalence of multidrug-resistant and extended-spectrum beta-lactamase-producing Escherichia coli in urban community wastewater

Dennis Schmiege et al.

Summary: This study examined the presence of ESBL-producing E. coli in wastewater from three different communities in the Ruhr Metropolis, Germany. The results showed that the general community is an important indirect discharger, with higher loads of ESBL-producing E. coli in socio-spatially disadvantaged areas. Differences in resistance profiles were mainly observed for antibiotics used in outpatient care.

Traditional and Emerging Water Disinfection Technologies Challenging the Control of Antibiotic-Resistant Bacteria and Antibiotic Resistance Genes

Yiwei Cai et al.

Summary: The emergence of antibiotic-resistant bacteria and antibiotic resistance genes in the environment has created challenges in treating infectious diseases, with wastewater treatment plants serving as reservoirs for these bacteria and genes. Current disinfection technologies focus on removing pathogenic microorganisms in water, but often overlook the transmission of antibiotic resistance genes. Further research is needed to develop future disinfection technologies that effectively address this issue.
