Biofilm and Small Colony Variants-An Update on Staphylococcus aureus Strategies toward Drug Resistance

Henan Guo et al.

Summary: The overuse of antibiotics leading to drug-resistance and multidrug-resistance has become a major concern. Staphylococcus aureus, as a representative of drug-resistant pathogens, can cause a variety of infections and adapt to diverse environments through phenotypic changes like biofilm and SCVs. This article reviews the development of drug-resistance, explores classical mechanisms, and focuses on the non-classical resistance mechanisms triggered by biofilm and SCVs.

Global burden of bacterial antimicrobial resistance in 2019: a systematic analysis

Christopher J. L. Murray et al.

Summary: Antimicrobial resistance (AMR) poses a significant threat to global human health, and this study provides the most comprehensive estimates of AMR burden to date. By estimating deaths and disability-adjusted life-years (DALYs) associated with bacterial AMR in 204 countries and territories in 2019, the study highlights the impact of resistance and the leading pathogen-drug combinations contributing to it.

The Role of Staphylococcus aureus YycFG in Gene Regulation, Biofilm Organization and Drug Resistance

Shizhou Wu et al.

Summary: Antibiotic resistance, particularly in MRSA infections, is a serious global health concern with significant social and financial consequences. The YycFG two-component signal transduction system in Staphylococcus aureus is crucial for bacterial viability and plays a key role in cell membrane metabolism, cell wall synthesis, and biofilm formation. Inhibition of the YycFG pathway shows promise as a potential target for managing MRSA-induced infections by reducing biofilm formation and bacterial pathogenicity.

Highly accurate protein structure prediction with AlphaFold

John Jumper et al.

Summary: Proteins are essential for life, and accurate prediction of their structures is a crucial research problem. Current experimental methods are time-consuming, highlighting the need for accurate computational approaches to address the gap in structural coverage. Despite recent progress, existing methods fall short of atomic accuracy in protein structure prediction.

Comprehensive analysis of bacteriocins in Streptococcus mutans

Atsuko Watanabe et al.

Summary: The study investigated the distribution of bacteriocin genes in 125 strains of Streptococcus mutans and found variations in the matching of different bacteriocins. By studying the antibacterial activity of single-positive bacteriocin gene strains, it was observed that each bacteriocin gene-positive strain displayed a unique pattern of antibacterial activity. This suggests that individual S. mutans strains may impact the bacterial composition of dental plaques.
