Review: Production factors affecting poultry carcass and meat quality attributes

E. Baeza et al.

Summary: Poultry meat mainly comes from standard production systems, but alternative systems using outdoor rearing conditions can also be found. These different production systems can affect the quality of meat, which is determined by various factors and can have potential conflicts between different quality dimensions. Outdoor access positively impacts image and nutritional properties, but also increases exposure risks to environmental contaminants and diseases.

Virulence, resistance and clonality of Proteus mirabilis isolated from patients with community-acquired urinary tract infection (CA-UTI) in Brazil

Wellington Danilo de Oliveira et al.

Summary: Urinary tract infections (UTIs) are common in both hospital and community settings, and Proteus mirabilis is a significant causative agent. This study examined virulence factors, antimicrobial sensitivity, and clonal relationships of 183 P. mirabilis strains isolated from CA-UTI patients in Londrina, Brazil. Although the strains were sensitive to antimicrobials, they exhibited a strong ability to form biofilms, complicating antibiotic therapy. Clones of P. mirabilis were observed circulating in the city.

ESBL and AmpC β-Lactamase Encoding Genes in E. coli From Pig and Pig Farm Workers in Vietnam and Their Association With Mobile Genetic Elements

Yaovi Mahuton Gildas Hounmanou et al.

Summary: Animals, especially pigs, are important sources of ESBL/AmpC-producing bacteria in humans. Transfer of ESBL/AmpC genes between pigs and pig farmers in Vietnam was investigated, revealing a variety of ESBL genes carried on different plasmid types. Horizontal spread of these plasmids may play a role in the dissemination of antibiotic resistance.

From Farm-to-Fork: E. Coli from an Intensive Pig Production System in South Africa Shows High Resistance to Critically Important Antibiotics for Human and Animal Use

Shima E. Abdalla et al.

Summary: The study on antibiotic resistance profiles of E. coli in an intensive pig production system in uMgungundlovu District, South Africa, revealed high levels of resistance to various antibiotics, including some critically important ones for animal and human health. This suggests a potentially high level of antibiotic usage in the food-animal production chain, highlighting the need for efficient antibiotic stewardship to mitigate adverse health consequences.

Dissemination of a multidrug resistant CTX-M-65 producer Salmonella enterica serovar Infantis clone between marketed chicken meat and children

Sandra Martinez-Puchol et al.

Summary: This study aimed to characterize Salmonella enterica serovar Infantis isolated from chicken meat and found that these bacteria were multidrug-resistant, with clonal relationships to S. Infantis causing diarrhea in children. The dissemination of MDR S. Infantis between marketed meat and children highlights a public health problem that needs to be controlled at the livestock level.

Multidrug-Resistant, Including Extended-Spectrum Beta Lactamase-Producing and Quinolone-Resistant, Escherichia coli Isolated from Poultry and Domestic Pigs in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania

Zuhura I. Kimera et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the phenotypic profile of MDR Escherichia coli isolated from poultry and domestic pigs, with a higher occurrence rate observed in domestic pigs. The E. coli isolates showed high resistance to multiple antibiotics, particularly tetracycline, nalidixic acid, ampicillin, and trimethoprim/sulfamethoxazole. Additionally, resistance was significantly higher in ESBL producers and quinolone-resistant isolates compared to non-ESBL producers and non-quinolone-resistant E. coli.

Isolation, characterization and antibiotic resistance of Proteus mirabilis from Belgian broiler carcasses at retail and human stool

Zhongjia Yu et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the isolation and characterization of Proteus mirabilis on broiler carcasses and found a high strain heterogeneity among isolates from broilers and human stools. Although the same strains were not shared, there was similarity in antibiotic resistance profiles, indicating a potential role of poultry products as a source for human infection.

Proteus mirabilis from community-acquired urinary tract infections (UTI-CA) shares genetic similarity and virulence factors with isolates from chicken, beef and pork meat

Matheus Silva Sanches et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the prevalence, virulence profile, and similarity between P. mirabilis strains isolated from chicken, beef, and pork meat and those causing community-acquired urinary tract infections (UTI-CA), revealing that meats may be an important source of the dissemination of P. mirabilis responsible for causing UTIs in the community.

Antibiotic usage and resistance in animal production in Vietnam: a review of existing literature

Khanh Nguyen Di et al.

Summary: Inappropriate use of antibiotics in animal production in Vietnam has led to a crucial situation of antibiotic resistance. Lack of awareness among Vietnamese farmers on antibiotic guidelines has been identified as a major driver for this issue. Therefore, national action plans and antibiotic control programs are necessary to restrict antibiotic use in food-producing animals and curb the spread of antibiotic resistance.
