Prevalence, antimicrobial resistance, virulence gene profile and molecular typing of Campylobacter species isolated from poultry meat samples

Maryam Hadiyan et al.

Summary: This study assessed the prevalence, antibiotic resistance, virulence factors, and molecular typing of Campylobacter strains isolated from raw poultry meat samples. The findings indicate a high rate of contamination with antibiotic-resistant Campylobacter strains in raw poultry meat, highlighting the potential risk to human health.

Comparison of antimicrobial resistance in thermophilic Campylobacter strains isolated from conventional production and backyard poultry flocks

T. S. Dias et al.

Summary: The study revealed that Campylobacter spp. from conventional poultry production showed higher resistance to antibiotics compared to those from backyard poultry flocks, particularly in terms of amoxicillin with clavulanic acid, ceftiofur, erythromycin, and tetracycline. Additionally, a higher frequency of resistance to fluoroquinolones was observed in strains from both rearing systems, indicating the spread of resistant strains in poultry production environments.

Antimicrobial Resistance Profiles and Phylogenetic Analysis ofCampylobacter jejuniStrains Isolated in Brazil by Whole Genome Sequencing

Miliane Rodrigues Frazao et al.

Summary: This study aimed to determine antimicrobial resistance genotypes of 116 Campylobacter jejuni strains in Brazil using whole genome sequencing (WGS) and compared it with antimicrobial susceptibility testing (AST). The results showed high rates of resistance to ciprofloxacin and tetracyclines, highlighting the potential public health issue. WGS has the potential to be a powerful tool for predicting antibiotic resistance in campylobacteriosis, and the whole genome SNP analysis indicated potential transmission between sources over a 20-year period in Brazil.

Antimicrobial resistance genes and plasmids in Campylobacter jejuni from broiler production chain in Southern Brazil

Natalie Rauber Kleinubing et al.

Summary: The study found that in the broiler production chain in Southern Brazil, 82.2% of Campylobacter jejuni isolates showed resistance to at least one antimicrobial, with 46.4% being multidrug resistant. Among the resistant isolates, 91.3% had genes encoding multidrug efflux pumps, 81.2% of tetracycline-resistant isolates had the tet(O) gene, and all kanamycin-resistant isolates had the aphA-3 gene. Furthermore, 66.7% of ampicillin-resistant isolates had the bla(oxa-61) gene. This highlights the importance of prudent use of antimicrobial agents in animal production in Brazil to combat antimicrobial resistance.

Genomic analysis of the diversity, antimicrobial resistance and virulence potential of clinical Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli strains from Chile

Veronica Bravo et al.

Summary: This study conducted a comprehensive genome analysis of Campylobacter jejuni and Campylobacter coli strains from Chile, revealing underestimated incidence of campylobacteriosis in South America and highlighting the need for further genomic epidemiology studies in the region. The analysis identified high genetic diversity and widespread fluoroquinolone resistance, emphasizing the importance of understanding molecular epidemiology and antimicrobial resistance of this emerging pathogen in South American countries.

High Frequency and Diversity of Tetracycline Resistance Genes in the Microbiota of Broiler Chickens in Tunisia

Antonietta Di Francesco et al.

Summary: The widespread use of tetracyclines in clinical practice and livestock has led to an increase in tetracycline resistance among bacterial populations. A study in Tunisia tested DNA from cloacal swabs of 195 broiler chickens for 14 tetracycline resistance genes, revealing a high frequency and diversity of these genes. This highlights the urgent need for a robust national antimicrobial resistance monitoring plan in Tunisia's poultry sector.

Summary: The study compared the effects of different classes of antimicrobials on planktonic and biofilm forms of Campylobacter jejuni, finding variations in susceptibility and resistance patterns among strains. Overall, all tested drugs showed antimicrobial action in planktonic form, with differences observed in biofilm production and effectiveness of tetracycline as an antibiofilm agent.
