While most experiments have been conducted in vitro, evidence is emerging on the in vivo efficacy of some peptides.

Probing the antioxidant activity of functional proteins and bioactive peptides in Hermetia illucens larvae fed with food wastes

Summary: This study characterized and quantified functional proteins and bioactive peptides produced from the enzymatic digestion of black soldier fly (BSF) fed with food wastes using proteomics-based analysis. The results revealed a variety of proteins and peptides, some of which exhibited strong antioxidant activity. The study suggests that the bioconversion of food wastes by BSF has the potential to generate valuable functional proteins and bioactive peptides, though further research is needed.

Exploration of Dipeptidyl Peptidase-IV (DPP-IV) Inhibitory Peptides from Silkworm Pupae (Bombyx mori) Proteins Based on In Silico and In Vitro Assessments

Summary: This study aimed to explore DPP-IV inhibitory peptides from silkworm pupae proteins through in silico analysis and in vitro assessments. The results showed that pepsin and bromelain treatment led to better production of DPP-IV inhibitory peptides from silkworm pupae protein. Two novel DPP-IV inhibitory peptides were identified and exhibited mixed-type inhibition mode. This study demonstrated that in silico analysis combined with in vitro assessments can be an effective approach for discovering DPP-IV peptides from silkworm pupae proteins.

Identification of peptides from edible silkworm pupae (Bombyx mori) protein hydrolysates with antioxidant activity

The Potential Impacts by the Invasion of Insects Reared to Feed Livestock and Pet Animals in Europe and Other Regions: A Critical Review

Summary: Using alien insect species as food and feed can address protein shortage and promote sustainable feed production, but their invasive potential needs to be considered due to its threat to biodiversity. While the European Union has authorized eight insect species for use as feed ingredients, the risk assessments have mostly focused on northern European regions. Some of these insect species have invasive potential and can negatively affect local ecosystems and cause economic losses. It is recommended to conduct risk assessments and monitoring programs in other EU regions, and also consider native insect species as alternative feed ingredients.

Purification and identification of novel antioxidant peptides from silkworm pupae (Bombyx mori) protein hydrolysate and molecular docking study
