Levels of microplastics and their characteristics in molluscs from North-West Mediterranean Sea: Human intake

Nora Exposito et al.

Summary: This study investigated the concentration and composition of microplastics in mollusc species population on the Catalan coast, and estimated the amount and frequency of microplastic intake through the consumption of molluscs by the Catalan population. The results indicate that the consumption of molluscs is an important route of microplastic exposure for the Catalan population.

Are bivalves a source of microplastics for humans? A case study in the Brazilian markets

Fabio Cavalca Bom et al.

Summary: This study examined the concentrations of microplastics in four important bivalve species in the Brazilian market, and found that bivalves are a source of microplastic contamination for the Brazilian population. Further research is needed to evaluate the ingestion of microplastics through bivalves in different regions.

Investigation of microplastic contamination in blood cockles and green mussels from selected aquaculture farms and markets in Thailand

Anh Tuan Ta et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that bivalves can serve as bioindicators for microplastic pollution. This study investigated the presence of microplastics in blood cockles and green mussels from aquaculture farms and markets in Thailand. The results indicate that the number of microplastics in bivalve samples from the markets is higher than in the aquaculture farms, possibly due to contamination during packaging and transportation processes. The dominant types of microplastics found were fragments and fibers, with polypropylene, polyethylene, copolymer, polyester, and nylon being the most common polymers.

Microplastics in fisheries and aquaculture: implications to food sustainability and safety

Ian Vazquez-Rowe et al.

Summary: Plastic waste is a global environmental concern, with microplastics posing threats to marine ecosystems and potentially human health. Studies have shown damaging effects of microplastics on marine biota, but further research is needed to understand the full extent of their impact on human health.

Plastisphere enrich antibiotic resistance genes and potential pathogenic bacteria in sewage with pharmaceuticals

Zhiqi Wang et al.

Summary: Microplastics and pharmaceuticals are common emerging pollutants in sewage, and their coexistence may have more negative effects on the environments. This study found that on plastic biofilms, antibiotic resistance genes and multidrug resistance genes were enriched, potentially accelerating the spread of these resistance genes, while potential pathogenic bacteria were also found to accumulate on the biofilms.

Microplastics in fresh and processed mussels sampled from fish shops and large retail chains in Italy

L. Nalbone et al.

Summary: This study investigated the presence of microplastics in three mussel species sourced from various retailers in Italy, finding a significantly higher number of microplastics in fresh mussels. The exposure to microplastics in mussels is limited in its impact on human health, but the sources of microplastics in store-bought mussels may be various and related to contamination along the food production chain. Further studies are needed to properly assess and manage the risk of microplastics in food.
