Update on Anti-Inflammatory Molecular Mechanisms Induced by Oleic Acid

Consuelo Santa-Maria et al.

Summary: In 2010, the Mediterranean diet was recognized as a UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage, with olive oil being its most characteristic food due to its high nutritional value. Oleic acid (OA), the major component of olive oil, has been found to have various health properties, affecting cell membrane fluidity, receptors, signaling pathways, and gene expression. Additionally, OA has been identified as an activator of sirtuin 1 (SIRT1) and oleoylethanolamide (OEA) derived from OA has been suggested as a potential therapeutic agent for obesity treatment. OA may also influence epigenetic mechanisms and regulate microRNA expression, contributing to its anti-inflammatory effects. This review focuses on understanding the immune modulation exerted by OA through examining cellular reactions and intracellular processes in T cells, macrophages, and neutrophils.

Potential Anti-Obesity, Anti-Steatosis, and Anti-Inflammatory Properties of Extracts from the Microalgae Chlorella vulgaris and Chlorococcum amblystomatis under Different Growth Conditions

Ana Regueiras et al.

Summary: Microalgae extracts demonstrated anti-obesity, anti-steatosis, and anti-inflammatory activities and could be valuable resources for developing future nutraceuticals. The ultrasound-assisted ethanolic extract of the heterotrophic C. vulgaris significantly enhanced the anti-obesity activity and demonstrated that the alteration of culture conditions is a valuable approach to increase the production of high-value compounds.

Food grade extraction of Chlorella vulgaris polar lipids: A comparative lipidomic study

Daniela Couto et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the efficiency of lipid extraction from Chlorella vulgaris and compared the effects of food-grade ethanol, ultrasound-assisted ethanol, and dichloromethane/methanol. The results showed that ultrasound-assisted ethanol and dichloromethane/methanol had the highest extraction yields, and the fatty acid profiles were identical among all extracts. However, the polar lipidome of the ethanol extracts was significantly different from the other two extracts. These findings are important for obtaining high yields of omega-3 and omega-6-rich extracts from C. vulgaris for food applications.

Effects of outdoor and indoor cultivation on the polar lipid composition and antioxidant activity of Nannochloropsis oceanica and Nannochloropsis limnetica: A lipidomics perspective

Daniela Couto et al.

Summary: This study investigates the plasticity of the polar lipid profile of marine and freshwater Nannochloropsis species grown in indoor and outdoor photobioreactors. The results show that indoor conditions lead to higher lipid content, while outdoor conditions result in a lipid profile rich in phospholipids and betaine lipids. The study provides insight into the lipid metabolic adaptation of Nannochloropsis species.

Chlorella unsaturated fatty acids suppress high-fat diet-induced obesity in C57/BL6J mice

Yang Yang et al.

Summary: Chlorella unsaturated fatty acids (C.UFAs), rich in linoleic acid, have been found to have antiobesity effects by reducing body weight gain, improving blood glucose and lipid profile. The mechanisms may involve down-regulation of lipogenic genes and up-regulation of lipolytic gene, as well as activation of the AMPK signaling pathway.

Omega-9 fatty acids: potential roles in inflammation and cancer management

Mohamed A. Farag et al.

Summary: This article mainly introduces the pharmacological activities of omega-9 fatty acids in inflammation management. Multiple studies have shown that omega-9 fatty acids such as oleic acid can alleviate inflammation and play a role in physiological and pathological conditions such as wound healing and eye inflammation. In addition, this article compiles for the first time the action mechanisms of oleic acid as an anti-tumor agent in different types of cancer.

Chemoplasticity of the polar lipid profile of the microalgae Chlorella vulgaris grown under heterotrophic and autotrophic conditions

Daniela Couto et al.

Summary: This study characterized the polar lipidome of Chlorella vulgaris grown under autotrophic and heterotrophic conditions, revealing differences in lipid species and abundance distribution. Heterotrophic cultures had a higher abundance of low unsaturated species, while autotrophic cultures were rich in highly unsaturated glycolipids and lyso species. The fatty acids profile showed a high content of omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in autotrophic cultures and omega-6 fatty acids in heterotrophic cultures. The two lipid extracts exhibited high antioxidant activity and inhibitory capacity for cyclooxygenase-2, providing evidence of polar lipid plasticity in microalgae for biotechnology applications.

Microalgae Oil as an Effective Alternative Source of EPA and DHA for Gilthead Seabream (Sparus aurata) Aquaculture

Ester Santigosa et al.

Summary: Microalgal oils have emerged as a sustainable alternative to fish oil and nutritionally poorer vegetable oils for aquaculture species like gilthead seabream. Incorporating microalgal oils in the diet of seabream resulted in maintained fish performance, lower contamination levels in fillets, and similar sensory quality compared to diets rich in fish oil. This offers a more resilient means for sustaining the future growth of seabream aquaculture.
