Mechanical properties of tef starch based edible films: Development and process optimization

Kenenisa Dekeba Tafa et al.

Summary: The problem of non-biodegradable synthetic plastic causing harm to the environment can be solved by using affordable and environmentally friendly edible starch-based biodegradable film. This study focused on developing and optimizing tef starch based edible films with improved mechanical properties. The findings showed that increasing glycerol concentration in the film-forming solution decreased tensile strength, elastic modulus, and puncture force, while increasing elongation at break and puncture deformation. Increasing agar concentration improved the mechanical properties. The optimized tef starch edible film exhibited higher tensile strength, elastic modulus, and puncture force, while lower elongation at break and puncture deformation.

Irradiation impact on biological activities of Anthraquinone pigment produced from Talaromyces purpureogenus and its evaluation, characterization and application in beef burger as natural preservative

Ibrahim A. Soliman et al.

Summary: This study successfully extracted a red natural pigment from Talaromyces purpureogenus and found that the pigment has antibacterial and antioxidant effects. The results also showed that applying the pigment to beef burgers can extend their shelf life and reduce bacterial growth. Additionally, the pigment offers a viable alternative to gamma irradiation for extending the shelf life of food products.
