Presence of Listeria at primary production and processing of food of non-animal origin (FNAO) in Bavaria, Germany

Summary: Several foodborne outbreaks associated with food of non-animal origin (FNAO) were investigated in Bavaria, Germany. The study focused on the prevalence of Listeria spp., including L. monocytogenes, in facilities that produce ready-to-eat FNAO. A total of 407 samples were taken, including environmental and food samples, as well as samples of irrigation and processing water. While no contamination with E. coli, enterococci, and P. aeruginosa was found, Listeria spp. were detected in 12.53% of the samples, with L. monocytogenes identified in 1.72% of the environmental and processing water samples. The study highlights the importance of water sources, cultivation practices, and hygiene protocols in preventing Listeria contamination in ready-to-eat soft fruits and vegetables.

Species-Specific Quality Control, Assembly and Contamination Detection in Microbial Isolate Sequences with AQUAMIS
